Toshiba to launch Regza AT300 tablet in June

Japanese electronics giant Toshiba will launch its Regza AT300 tablet computer in June. Initially it will be available in Japan and may hit other markets, including India, after some months.

However, Toshiba’s Indian spokesperson did not confirm the development.

The Toshiba Regza AT300 tablet will use an Nvidia Tegra 2 running at 1 GHz and a 10.1 inch display with viewing ratio of 16:10.

Regza will run on the tablet version of operating system, called Honeycomb, but will feature an integrated user interface with it, the nature of which is not known yet.
For storage, Regza tablet will have 16 of on board storage and a total of 1 GB of for faster operations.

It will also come with stereo speakers and a 5 rear camera apart from a front facing camera for video conferencing.

Regza AT300 is priced at 60,000 yen (about Rs 32,500).

Tablets to gain momentum

Sales of tablet computers may rise phenomenally in the next four years, says Strategy Analytics, a global research and consulting firm. It says the global tablet revenues may go up to $49 billion within a short span of four years (by 2015).

Martin Bradley, associate director at Strategy Analytics, says, “In terms of revenues, the largest opportunity for tablet vendors will be in North America, Asia Pacific and Western Europe. Although the average selling prices in Asia Pacific will be less than 85 per cent of those in Western Europe by 2015, the total value of the Asia Pacific region will exceed Western Europe by this time.”

Earlier, there were reports from some other research firms too which predicted even a larger increase in the tablet market size.

The tablets have been termed as the most disruptive force in the computing space by Goldman Sachs. Goldman Sachs estimated that about 35 per cent of the PC market will be eaten up by the tablet devices.

Though there is unanimity about tablet’s imminent dominance but the only point of difference is the market share of the miniature computer version.

The iPad from Apple is the clear leader in the tablet space, though Galaxy Tab from Samsung is also in the process of catching it up from behind.

Idea announces discount on international roaming

Idea Cellular has launched a special international offer, under which its postpaid subscribers can avail a flat 25 per cent discount on their mobile phone usage while traveling in 12 countries including UAE, USA, Singapore, UK, Thailand, China, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and Italy.

Starting April 15th, the offer is valid for three months till July 14th 2011.

The roaming rates are applicable for incoming calls, outgoing calls, and GPRS.

Speaking about the new offer, Sashi Shankar, chief marketing officer, Idea Cellular said, “The summer season witnesses a sharp rise in the outbound traffic from India as people go on leisure holidays or to spend time with their friends and families living abroad or travel for business needs. This travel voucher offers Rs 2,000 off on international hotel bookings, Rs 1,500 on international round trip flights, and Rs 500 on domestic round trip flights.

Airtel 3G services now in UP, Uttarakhand

Bharti airtel has launched its services for the UP West and Uttarakhand circle while making its third generation telephony services available to customers in cities like Agra, Dehradun and Meerut to begin with.

In order to help their customer experience the Airtel 3G, 11 3G experience zones have been set up in Dehradun, followed by 12 centres each in both Agra and Meerut. Following this launch Airtel plans to roll out this service in 30 more towns in the UP West and Uttarakhand circle in the next 180 days.

“Airtel’s 3G services will change the way our customers communicate and experience the advantage of adding power of mobility to the internet. We expect a strong uptake and high demand for these 3G Services and welcome our customers of UP West and Uttarakhand and we are confident that this launch will add impetus to the expansion of data services in India,” said Deepak Mehrotra, operations director-north and west, mobile services, Bharti airtel.

With data speeds of up to 21.1 for download and 14.4 Mbps for upload, users can expect a vast improvement in their surfing and data usage experience along with added functionalities like video calling.

Airtel 3G service is already available in 31 cities and towns across India including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysore, Manipal, Udipi, Jaipur, Delhi NCR, Hubli, Patna, Hyderabad and West Bengal.

Huawei launches 3G phone with BSNL Tamil Nadu

Huawei, along with BSNL Tamil Nadu, has launched a touch screen phone, U7510. The phone looks very similar to Huawei’s phone Ideos but is based on Qualcomm’s Brew operating system.

The phone comes bundled with free video callings for 30 minutes every month for six months (local/STD), free (Rs 50 every month for six months) and free 25MB 3G Internet/Data usage. The customer has to shell out Rs 6750 for this package. The scheme is only valid in Tamil Nadu.

What is surprising is that the phone is not going to be launched anywhere else in the country. This was confirmed by a Huawei spokesperson.

Huawei U7510 is powered by a Qualcomm Brew 3.1 alongside GSM/UMTS/HSDPA that provides up to 3.6 data speed, and with support.

The phone has a 2.8 inch touchscreen, 100 internal memory, an expandable memory support up to 8 GB, a 2 camera and a second VGA camera for video calling on the front.

RCom launches mobile banking with SBI

Reliance Communications has launched ‘Mobile Banking Services’ in association with the State Bank of India (SBI). RCom’s GSM consumers can use the facilities for a host of banking services at any time and place through their cell phones.

RCom subscribers with SBI account will have to register for the services with the bank. The user can then dial *595# to view menu choices and then select the choice.

There is no need for any special mobile application or to use the service. Customers will be able to view account balance, get mini statements, do fund transfer, change MPIN or recharge their mobile account. Users will also receive confirmation regarding successful transaction over SMS.

Mahesh Prasad, president, wireless business, Reliance Communications said, “This mobile banking service is yet another useful service for our customers, they can now avoid those long queues at the SBI branches”

The service is free of charge for the consumers.

Tata Indicom launches VAS service for rural customers

Tata Indicom has joined hands with Handygo.com to provide new value added services targeted specially at its rural customers. With the use of these services, Tata Indicom mobile phone users in rural areas can get specialised information on topics like health, education, finance, weather information, mandi rates, livestock, agriculture and fisheries over the IVR (Interactive Voice Response).

Users can get expert answers to specific queries and if the response is not readily available they can also get their query recorded on the IVR to which they will be provided an answer later.

To access this service Tata Indicom customers need to dial the toll free number 556780 and they will be automatically guided through the whole process.

Subscribers can avail this service in the form of subscription pack for which they will be charged Rs 5, Rs 10, Rs 20 per month which will get them 50, 100, 200 minutes worth of talktime for 7, 15, 30 days respectively.

“We envisage great potential in the untapped rural market and are encouraged about the positive feedback from the end consumers. We have partnered with various large associations for ensuring the latest and authentic information for our CSPs subscribers. Our IVR based rural product is available in all regional languages along with Hindi and English,” said Praveen Rajpal, chief executive officer of Handygo Technologies.

Handygo.com, the content provider for this VAS service, has tie ups with various government and non government organisations such as Care India, Aviva Life Insurance, Indian Metrological Department, INCOIS, Hariyali Kisan Bazaar, Network for Fish Quality Management and Sustainable Fishing, Transparency International India, Sonalika and EKO India Financial Services for getting specialised and reliable information in the various verticals for which this service is available.

Alongside the launch of this new VAS service, Tata Indicom as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility initiative has also employed 50 blind people in association with the National Association of the Blind, Mumbai and the Blind Relief Association in Delhi who have specifically been chosen to make calls for the product Behtar Zindagi VAS services.

This is not the first time such a service has been launched by any Indian telecom service provider. In the past, Idea Cellular, Reliance telecom and Uninor (Unitech Wireless) have also launched similar services for their rural customers.

RockMelt browser’s iPhone version arrives

RockMelt, a social networking browser, has launched its iPhone version which synchronises the desktop with the mobile one, including the Facebook and Twitter management tools. The bookmarking option has been reworked by the RockMelt mobile team and is renamed as ‘Read Later’.

All the usual social networking activities, such as retweeting and wall postings, geotagging, opening links quickly, and adding photos, can be easily done through the RockMelt mobile browser. However the iPhone version would not feature private and tabbed browsing options, which are available in its desktop versions.

The synchronisation with the mobile device happens automatically, a feature which is different from other browsers where users have to request such features.

The application, which is likely to arrive within a week, hasn’t been approved by the Apple yet.

Other operating system versions of RockMelt, including Android, are likely to arrive soon.
The mobile version of RockMelt is more likely to be liked by those users who find it difficult to navigate their way through a browser.

When the RockMelt startup was launched, it came with an attempt to refresh the web browsing experience. Both the mobile and desktop versions of the browser allow users to follow certain Twitter and Facebook posts, and even the links can be followed without typing in the web address, though the option to type web addresses is there.

Probably RockMelt believes mobile users do not have much time to type in the web address to visit websites and that they just follow some websites and blogs within a short interval of time.

In a nutshell, the RockMelt attempt is ambitious and it wants to be the mobile homescreen for the users.

G’Five to launch Android tablet

G’Five, a Chinese mobile handset maker, is planning to launch an based tablet PC in India within the next one month.

The tablet will be a 7 inch capacitive touchscreen device based on Android 2.1. The choice of Android 2.1 is surprising as version 2.2 is already available in a wide variety of phones, including handsets from Indian brands such as Micromax and Spice.

Other hardware details were not disclosed. However, we expect the device to run on VIA processors, with a rating of 600 or more.

Jaideep Chopra, vice president, G’Five, says, “We are ready with the product; we are just waiting for the right time to introduce the device. The pricing will be competitive with what is available in the market.”

Given the fact that the tablet will be based on an older version of Android, we are expecting it to be priced below Rs 15,000 as competitors such as Olive Telecom have got devices with the latest version of Android currently selling at Rs 19,000. HCL too has entered the market with its own tablet starting at Rs 14,900.

Meanwhile, G’Five has opened 10 exclusive stores under the brand name of Mobispot. G’Five, which according to the IDC is the third largest handset player in India, is planning to launch 500 such stores across the country, including 20 in Delhi.

About Mobispot, Chopra said, “We will be launching 500 Mobispot stores across the country. We will focus not just on tier two and tier three but also metro cities with 20 stores in Delhi alone. These stores will sell only G’Five products including our lineup of mobile phones, tablets and laptops.”
