Fujitsu to launch 7 inch Android tablet

0

While the world is still rejoicing the launch of Lifebook TH40/D Windows 7 based tablet, its maker Fujitsu is all set to launch another tablet but only this time they have Google in their mind as its operating system.

As reported by Digitimes, the company is set to announce the launch of its Google Android based tablet but will be launching it sometime in the month of August this year.

The Android based tablet will feature a smaller 7 inch touchscreen as compared to the 10.1 inch screen of the Windows tablet. Although there was no official word from Fujitsu about its hardware configurations, this new tablet is expected to feature a 1.5 GHz sourced from Intel as the one featured on the Windows counterpart or can also be sourced from Qualcomm or Nvidia.

Considering the size reduction, the 7 inch tablet is expected to have mobile communications connectivity along with a frontal camera supporting video conferencing.

It may also feature the latest Android operating system for tablets, the Honeycomb 3.1, which is a recently launched upgrade to the Honeycomb 3.0.

The pricing, however, not confirmed by the company but is expected to be price within the price bracket of Rs 25,000 upwards.

Google fixes security flaw

0

A flaw in the operating system, which allowed hackers to gain unencrypted data of a user over public WiFi networks, has been fixed up by the Google, the maker of the OS.
The security flaw was highlighted by a group of German developers and was reported by The Mobile Indian earlier too.

It was found that Android devices running on 2.3.3 or older versions are particularly susceptible especially when the one uses services such as Google Calender and Google docs to be sent over-the-air unencrypted over a public WiFi network. This may allow hackers, present in the network, to gain the user’s login ID and password.

Realising the gravity of the situation, Google has released a server side patch that will provide a solution for this issue in no time. Users do not need to do anything for installing this patch, it will be automatically pushed to the device.

The update process has already begun and Google expects the whole process to finalise within a week.

“Today we’re starting to roll out a fix which addresses a potential security flaw that could, under certain circumstances, allow a third party access to data available in calendar and contacts. This fix requires no action from users and will roll out globally over the next few days,” said Google’s spokesperson to Computerworld.

In the latest release of the Android Gingerbread 2.3.4, this issue has been answered and users running the new operating system are not prone to any attacks through this.
However, the percentage of users using the Gingerbread is very thin and rest of the population was largely at risk before this patch.

Nokia could soon come out with yet another MeeGo device and it may be named as N9.
A purported video of the device was uploaded on the Youtube. However, the video was removed immediately by Nokia claiming copyright issues.

Built on the same hardware platform as the Nokia N97, the N9 will feature a slide out keypad and an angular placed screen along with an extended keyboard.

It likely to have a display of 4 inch or more of 360 x 640 with a capacitive touch. The is expected to be in the 1GHz category and may feature a totally revamped version of the MeeGo interface.

The teaser video, which was accidentally put on YouTube, reveals that the N9 will come armed with integrated Near Field Communication and Augmented Reality capabilities. Social media will also be an integral part of the new User Interface.

The teaser said that Nokia is ready with the device and it is just a matter of time before it officially announces the device.

Android 3.1 update coming in June to Acer and Asus

0

Asus, which will introduce its Eee Pad Transformer tablet in India next month, has announced that it will offer an 3.1 update over the air starting this June. It will announce the country-wise schedule in June itself.

EeePad transformer, as the name suggests, is a 10.1 inch tablet that can also become a netbook once attached to its keypad dock. Transformer currently ships with Android 3.0, and is one of the first devices to get the updated version.

Another tablet to get this update in June will be the Acer Iconia A500 tablet, which was launched in India just a couple of weeks ago. However, Acer officials have refused to comment on the expected release of the update for Indian users.

Motorola Xoom, which is yet to be launched in India, is also getting this update. This is important for many in India as the tablet is already available through several e-commerce websites such as Homeshop18.com.

Android 3.1, which is also known as Honeycomb, has user interface improvements that make it faster and more efficient to use. Along with it, transitions throughout the system and across standard apps are also improved.

The update will provide additional support for a variety of based peripherals and accessories such as keyboards, mice, game controllers and digital cameras.

The has undergone a complete overhaul, bringing support for popular web standards such as CSS, 3D animation, and CSS fixed positioning to all sites.

It also adds support for playback of embedded HTML5 video content. Users will now be able to save web pages, including all styling and images, locally for offline viewing.

Android finds a way to curb piracy

0

To counter the scourge of piracy of applications, has come up with a way, called Market License Server, through which the developers can actually verify whether the app running on a smartphone is a legitimate one or not.

If used, this facility let the apps, even pirated copies, to ping the servers of developers which will in turn find out whether it is a pirated one or not.

The developers will have then two options &#151 they can either block the pirated app right away or they can switch the user to a lighter version of the app so they can switch to the paid version later, if they so desire.

Till recently, major video game publishers such as Gameloft avoided Android Market because of rampant piracy of applications. Some analysts believe the users paid more money to the platform because for quite some time it was the only app store in the market which is more secure.

Another reason for heightened piracy over Android is due to the fact that in iOS devices users need to jailbreak their devices to install pirated apps, which involves more effort and therefore users prefer to buy genuine apps mostly.

Google search app for iOS improved

0

Google has announced an update to its recently launched search application for devices. The new update promises to fix issues related to search speed and accuracy while adding a brand new interface, which will make the search process a lot easier.

The company had introduced voice-based search in the previous version of this application along with the ‘Just Talk’ feature, which enabled iOS users to perform voice search by directly speaking into the microphone without having to press any buttons for the operation.

The ‘Just Talk’ feature, which used to get turned on automatically, resulted in large numbers of false searches while the user was performing another search.

To solve this, Google has now turned off the ‘Just Talk’ feature. It now has to be manually turned on by the user. With this update Google claims that the application will be 20 per cent more responsive in terms of fetching search results while operating.

The problem of targeting or tapping the link within search results has also been resolved with this update. As opposed to a single link within the text, as was earlier the case, users can now click any part of the search result.

Apple devices running iOS version 3.0 and above will only be able to use this new application. Users can click here or the iTunes store to download the application for their device.

Android phones vulnerable to open WiFi

0

Close to 99 per cent of all devices are prone to data theft, especially of the username and passwords of Google services, German researchers have reported.

It was found that Android devices running on 2.3.3 or older versions are particularly susceptible as the client login authentication process used in these versions is insecure.

In fact, the vulnerability exists not just for Google apps but for any apps that don’t use a ClientLogin protocol (the protocol for logging in to your Google account) only on https (secured).

The researchers also recommended that Google reduce the lifespan of the authentication token to minimise the risk for users. They also suggest some simple steps for the users such as turning off automatic synchronisation; upgradation to Android 2.3.4; and avoiding open WiFi networks.

In fact, just when your phone checks for any open WiFi network, the Android settings should be prompted to ask for your permission, so that your system doesn’t use any networks you don’t trust.

Android devices are particularly insecure on open WiFi networks.

Android apps use ClientLogin for authentication purposes, in which the username and password are passed through the WiFi network.

The researchers said the Google Calendar apps were especially prone to interception by unauthorised people who could easily impersonate others and misuse the data thus gathered.

At the time of login, the Google service asks for an authentication token, which is known as authToken. This can be used for later requests for up to two weeks.

When used over an unencrypted service, sensitive data can be captured by unauthorised people. The problem is that the vulnerable version 2.3.3 is present on most Android devices, thus making the most of users’ vulnerability. Android 2.3.4 uses https in Google Calendar, but Picasa data continues to be unencrypted.

Vodafone to launch Android phone for Rs 5,800 in Europe

0

Vodafone has announced that it will launch an phone in Europe for just 80 Pounds (Rs 5,800). The phone, to be called as 858 Smart, will be based on Android Froyo 2.2 operating system with a 2.8 inch resistive touch screen.

Though there is no plan as of now to launch the phone in India, a company spokesperson did not rule out the possibility of the launch at a later date and said to The Mobile Indian “may be couple of months later we might launch it in India.”

The device will be launch in the UK, Germany and Italy first. It will come with regular features of Android such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Talk, Facebook and Twitter. It will additionally have Prepay Manager for topping up prepaid accounts.

The device weighing 100 grams will be manufactured by Huawei and will feature a 2MP zoom camera, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth. It will use a 528MHz Qualcomm and have 130 of memory besides a card slot supporting up to 32GB memory.

The handset will initially be available in black or white, followed by other colours. Vodafone said it plans to offer an online customisation feature allowing users to choose their own colour and add an image to the back cover.

The handset is very similar (in specification) to the Huawei Ideos, which is already available in India and is selling at Rs 7,500. This means that for Vodafone it will be a tight squeeze if they decide to bring the device to our shores, especially given the Ideos has slightly better specs with a 3.2 camera.

With MTS having announced a high-end bundled device with HTC Pulse being available for Rs 1,500 per month bundle, it might not be wrong to expect a similar deal from Vodafone (but this hope is a bit high).

Going by what they have done in the past, the device might just come to India, but not as a much subsidised version but rather a bundling with little bit of freebies like free data plan and some value added service subscription.
