AutoCAD now available as a mobile app

0

Autodesk, makers of 3D design software, has launched the AutoCAD WS mobile application on the platform. It is a free web and mobile application.

AutoCAD WS uses cloud computing (where information is stored in remote server) technology to enable Autodesk software users to view, edit and share their designs through web browsers and mobile devices.

AutoCAD WS for Android enables an expanded group of users to collaborate with architects, designers and engineers from anywhere in the world to carry their designs with them, wherever they go.

“Architects, engineers and designers have clearly communicated that they want access to their AutoCAD projects on their Android devices and we are more than happy to meet their needs. The impressive and consistent growth of the Android ecosystem serves as an excellent platform for Autodesk to further expand its accessibility through AutoCAD WS,” said Jayant Keswani, head marketing, Autodesk, India and SAARC.

He added, “Now our customers with Android smartphones and tablets can use AutoCAD WS to collaborate with colleagues in the field, and across the globe, on a wider variety of mobile devices.”

AutoCAD WS on Android allows viewing, editing, and markup tools so users can work on their designs while on the go. Users can open drawings from email attachments, sync files from the web, or upload drawings directly from AutoCAD software through the integrated online tab.

Drawings can also be saved locally for use in the field when an Internet connection is unavailable. One feature unique to Android version of AutoCAD WS is the text annotation tool supports integrated available on devices running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or above. Now Android users can insert comments and notations on a drawing simply by speaking rather than typing them into the text edit box.

In addition to the AutoCAD WS cloud, users can now connect directly to alternate storage folders from their Android, iPad and iPhone devices as well as through the AutoCAD WS web application. This currently includes: the Autodesk Buzzsaw service, Dropbox (through DropDAV), Microsoft SharePoint, Windows Server 2008, Box.net, MobileMe, and Egnyte, and other providers who support the WebDAV protocol.

AutoCAD WS for Android will be available for download on the Android Market. You can also click here to download the application.

Qualcomm announces new Augmented Reality platform

0

Qualcomm, which makes chips for smartphones, has announced the launch of its Augmented Reality platform for devices.

Android user can now expect more and better applications that will take their experience to a whole new level. And with several developers now joining hands for the development of applications on Augmented Reality, more useful and innovative apps that present information in a unique way can be expected.

Augmented Reality, in the mobile context, is the superimposition of location based content over live images viewed through mobile cameras. It is yet another technology that was developed for military purposes and is now finding its place in our daily lives.

Qualcomm has made use of the best available technology to make the experience as realistic as real world objects. A close integration between the hardware and the software allows the applications to deliver better and more realistic appeal to the user.

“We continue the tradition by making leading AR technology widely available to developers for commercial use. With more than 6,000 registered developers, we look forward to a new generation of AR applications available in the Android Market and other application stores.” said Jay Wright, senior director of business development, Qualcomm.

Qualcomm and Big PlayAR (an Augmented reality based game developer) recently introduced the first commercial application, the Mavs AR, using Qualcomm’s platform.
Mavs AR creates a virtual basketball court in the palm of your hand. Fans attending the Mavs playoff games at American Airlines Center can point their smartphone running the Mavs AR application at their ticket to play the game.

As of now the platform only supports devices running on Android 2.1 and above having a Qualcomm chip but soon more platforms and devices are expected to be added to the list.

Most smartphone searches end up in purchase decisions

0

People mostly use their smartphones to search information and to plan day-to-day activities, according to a study.

In the study commissioned by Google, the market research firm Ipsos OTX tried to understand how the smartphone was being used in the daily lives of users, especially how mobile advertising affected their shopping behaviour.

Some of the major findings were, 77 per cent users search for information using their smartphones, and 45 per cent plan their activities using the phone. Search websites are the most visited by the mobile users who use it to find news, dining, entertainment, shopping and travel options.

Google suggests to businesses in a blog post: “Incorporate location based products and services and make it easy for mobile customers to reach you because local information seeking is common among smartphone users. Develop a comprehensive cross-channel strategy as mobile shoppers use their phones in-store, online and via mobile website and apps to research and make purchase decisions.”

Close to 90 per cent users take some kind of action after conducting search, and about half of them end up purchasing something. Even other users, who don’t buy something, often end up recommending something for purchase to their friends and family.

Others continue to search for more information online using their computers. 95 per cent users end up searching for local information. Interestingly, after searching, 61 per cent make a call, 59 per cent visit a business and 44 per cent buy something.

The findings have a lot of appeal to the retailers and advertisers as they need to optimise their websites for the mobile platform.

Also, as it is evident that local information are on high demand, there will be an increase in location based content and services to meet this demand.

iPad2’s official Indian launch in couple of days

0

The latest version of Apple’s famed iPad, called iPad2, is going to be launched in India soon.

Tim Cook, chief operating officer, Apple has said in a statement, “Apple, transitioning to the new iPad2 introduced on March 11, couldn’t make enough to meet demand. The shortfall to lower sales than analysts predicted. Apple is ramping up production as it prepares to start selling the tablet computer in 13 additional countries this month”.

It is expected that India is among the thirteen countries that Tim Cook was talking about. Vijay Sales, which is Apple’s premium resellers, had recently said in a Tweet that iPad2 will be available with them shortly. However, they have retracted in the statement since then.

Apple India spokesperson refused to comment on the launch date. When asked by ‘The Mobile Indian’ about the availability of iPad2 online on Homeshop18.com, he said that they are importing the device directly and Apple India will not honour the warranty till the time official launch happens.

He added that the devices bought before will get warranty post official launch. So people who have bought it already need not worry, but hope that official launch happens before they need to claim warranty.

Homeshop18 on its end has said that if Apple doesn’t honour warranty claim here it will ship the device back and get it repaired.

While this is a good news, the bad part is that you will have to wait for couple of weeks before you get your device back from repairs.

Paymate, IFMR tie up to drive financial inclusion

0

Paymate, a mobile payment platform provider, and IFMR Rural Finance, have announced a tie-up to launch multiple financial inclusion projects through Kshetriya Gramin Financial Services (KGFS).

As a part of this initiative, Paymate has unveiled a mobile phone based person-to-person money transfer initiative in the Delhi to Uttarakhand corridor, and another that enables micro-loan repayments in villages in Ganjam, Orissa.

Commenting on the launch of these initiatives, Ajay Adiseshann, managing director and founder of PayMate, said, “Around 60 per cent of the country’s population does not have access to a bank account or even the necessary documents to help secure basic finance. On the other hand, there has been an exponential growth in mobile penetration with close to 200 million users in rural areas, making it a potent tool to create a financial ecosystem for the under and unbanked masses. The launch of these initiatives is an extension of our belief in the power of mobile telephony to drive financial inclusion.”

Dhanei KGFS offers a suite of financial services to its customers, and loans are a major share of its portfolio. The new initiative is aimed at improving the convenience of repayment.

Using a combination of float model and mobile equipped agents, registered agents of Dhanei KGFS located in remote villages are able to visit the customer to collect payment in cash while using a mobile phone to register the payment against the customer’s unique account ID via SMS.

The solution comes equipped with real time dynamic management information services for Dhanei KGFS to check all the payments and filter them by agent, customer, date and transaction, and even download them for future reference.

Over a year ago, PayMate, along with Tata Indicom and Corporation Bank, launched its person to person money transfer service &#151 Green.

“We at PayMate, firmly believe in the power of the mobile phone as a key instrument in extending financial services to the under and unbanked masses. The earlier Green Money transfer rollout followed by our new initiatives with IFMR further amplifies our commitment to this space,” added Adiseshann.

Commenting on the person-to-person remittance service, Anupama Joshi, chief executive officer, Sahastradhara KGFS, said, “The people living in the hills have been relying on post offices and informal channels for domestic remittance. However, the existing channels are either safe or convenient. The project has addressed the needs of customers to receive money in both, a safe and convenient manner.”

PayMate is a wireless transactions platform provider with a first-of-its-kind mobile payment platform which lets you link your mobile phone to a bank account, credit card or prepaid account – turning your mobile phone into a secure payment tool to be used anytime, anywhere.

PayMate has both hybrid and IVR based transaction platforms along with its BREW and j2ME application suite across all telecom operators.

How Windows Phone 7 can get ahead in the game

0

Windows Phone 7, the smartphone operating system of Microsoft, is something most users are not that familiar with as they are comfortable in a world dominated by iOS, and BlackBerry.

There are, however, benefits of buying the product of Microsoft in terms of its support for Windows Live, Office and Outlook. Windows Phone syncs more easily with PCs than other operating systems do.

With the integration of Xbox Live, WP7 is also appealing to hard core gamers. Users can send messages to their Xbox Live friends. They can change their avatars, and check scores or even what they have accomplished in the games. Users can also download Xbox Live games from Zune (the Microsoft equivalent of iTunes,) and play them on the move. Even Doodle Jump and Angry Birds are expected to be available on Windows Phone 7.

There are scores of apps available in the Zune Marketplace along with other content such as music.

Other features of Windows Phone 7 that would attract users are multi tasking, copy paste and custom ringtones. It is also a great looking and robust system.

However, not many people have actually seen a real Windows Phone 7 device. It cannot be expected that users will begin to like a product even before they have actually seen it. That’s precisely the point where the Microsoft Nokia deal comes into the picture, as Nokia has the reach and Microsoft has the software. Nobody knows the future but prospects look good for both the companies.

Also, the 1 GHz Snapdragon of Windows Phones does not perform well compared to other smartphone processors.

Samsung to make Amazon tablet

0

Amazon, the online retail giant and maker of Kindle e book reader, has placed an order for a tablet with Samsung.

The tablet will be a low cost device and is expected to run on a heavily modified version of operating system.

Amazon recently unveiled the Kindle application for Android tablets, and is looking to expand its e book business.

The co-founder of gadget blog Engadget, Peter Rojas, said he is 99 per cent sure that the e commerce giant is having Samsung build a device to compete with Apple’s iPad.

However, Rojas said Amazon might run a custom version of Android rather than employ Android 3.0 or Honeycomb, Google’s tablet OS.

“It’s entirely possible that Amazon’s tablet, like (Barnes & Noble’s) Nook Color, will use Android as a base upon which to build a totally customised experience that tightly integrates Amazon services,” Rojas wrote on April 21.” That integration would let Amazon charge a lot less for its tablet than it would otherwise,” he added.

Amazon would use such a low cost tablet, possibly in the range of $200 to $300, to extend its current web services, including thousands of books from the Kindle Store, movies and TV content from Amazon Instant Video and music from its new Cloud Drive digital storage locker.

Amazon has also built its Amazon Appstore for Android to rival Google’s Android Market.

The company recently introduced an advertisement-subsidised version of its Kindle e book reader and it could employ a similar approach to further reduce the price of its tablets also.

This would pose a strong challenge to iPad as well as other tablets that are going to be launched soon, as most of them are priced at $500 to $1,000 or more.

iOS is the most preferred platform for app developers

0

Android has overtaken as the best selling smartphone platform in the USA. However, has failed to win over the developer community, which cited fragmentation and slow growth of the platform as a major reason for opting for iOS.

This finding has come from a survey conducted by Appcelerator, which talked to 2,760 developers who said that the slow growth of Android tablets and fragmentation in the smartphone device market neutralises what Android gains by sales volumes.

A whopping 91 per cent of developers surveyed said they were extremely interested in writing apps for iPhones. 86 per cent wanted to write apps for iPads and 85 per cent for Android-based phones. Only 71 per cent of developers said they were interested in writing apps for Android tablets.

The numbers are huge for any company, especially in a market where consumers used to be extremely polarised. Also, as more developers are interested in iOS, users can easily expect more and better apps for their iOS devices.

Apple had enjoyed similar market dominance among players with its iPod.

However, there is no reason for Android users to worry as the difference in preference is not huge, which means that most developers will continue to develop applications for both platforms. It is however a wake up call for Google to address the problem of fragmentation before it starts taking its toll on the Android eco system.

In the tablet space as well there are several Android based tablets lined up for release, which will at least partially be able to address the lack of growth. However, iPad is expected to continue its dominance in the space for at least some time to come.

Apple’s ability to attract premium customers to its fold will moreover mean that it will continue to be favoured by the developer community.

The bottom line: since developers are more interested in developing for iOS, iPhone and iPad, buyers can continue to hope for great apps for their iOS devices.
