BlackBerry will not launch 10 inch PlayBook

0

Ever since the launch of RIM’s PlayBook in India, the company has been actively promoting its tablet here. But rumours to scrap an earlier plan of producing a 10 inch PlayBook have surfaced and it seems RIM will now focus more on smartphones and its QNX operating system.

According to N4BB, PlayBook 2, or the 10 inch PlayBook project has been scrapped so that RIM can focus on a smartphone running PlayBook’s QNX operating system. The main aspect of the phone will be its 1.2 GHz and a 4.3 inch touchscreen.

The smartphone plan was announced way back in December, and it seems that RIM is in a hurry to come out with this phone to bolster its dwindling market share in the smartphone space. The tablet market is yet to be established, so the company has some time to cement its place there.

However, there is no date announced for the planned smartphone yet. N4BB also said that RIM has started promoting the PlayBook. The device is currently said to be scheduled for release in October this year.

Google’s Facebook challenger announced; to be truly mobile ready

0

Google has announced its third attempt at a social networking platform after Orkut and Buzz. The first being Orkut, which is popular but has failed to challenge the formidable Facebook. The new platform is meant to enable more natural social networking among people.

It will be possible to group contacts so that updates needn’t be sent to everyone; and there is a feature called Hangout that can be visited by people when they are in the mood to chat. Hangout has video chatting and similar capabilities.

The best part is that this platform will be mobile ready right from go. The platform will use the phone’s location information to enable people to meet their friends when they’re in the vicinity. The feature is in essence a group service. The social network will also allow users to upload media directly from their mobiles.

Given that Google owns the platform, the current dominant player in the smartphone space, we expect the integration to be really tight, enabling even better usability than the web version will allow.

The new platform, currently called Google +, will allow people to segregate friends and family, and to also make ‘friend circles’ such that one’s closest friends can be in a small circle; while one’s acquaintances occupy a larger circle. Users will have the option to share updates with the circle of their choice.

Another function called Spark is like a discussion board allowing people to share videos, reading material etc. It is also possible to search and hold discussions here.

Currently the platform is under trial and is only available through invitation. Google+ is available on Android Market and the mobile web, and it’s coming soon to the Store as well.

Nokia 700 Zeta protoype handset

0

Following yesterday’s revelation about Nokia’s plans to develop 1 GHz loaded Series 40 handsets, we have spotted images of one of these devices. A Nokia handset codenamed Zeta, with model number 700, was photographed and secretly shared on GSMArena. This Nokia 700 Zeta prototype has a 3.2 inch and is touted as the thinnest mobile phone in the Nokia lineup.

Nokia 700 protoype handset has a 3.2 inch capacitive Amoled touchscreen nHD display. This handset will run on a 1 GHz processor and will feature Symbian Anna’s successor, Belle. Symbian Belle is one of the many significant updates promised to Nokia users. At the bottom, the Nokia 700 features a coloured speaker mesh.

The phone might be branded as N7 and will have a 5 camera with LED flash at the back. There’s also a front facing camera for video calling. Nokia has added a Near Field Communication chip in this handset. Packing a 1080 battery pack, Nokia 700 Zeta supports and WiFi (802.11 b/g/n).

There will also be a variant of Nokia 700 dubbed Helen or Nokia 701, which will have a 3.5 inch ClearBack display, 8 megapixel camera and Symbian Belle update.

Nokia plans to develop many affordable feature mobiles based on these and similar specifications.

Android marketplace return policy woes

0

Android marketplace last month took a big step towards changing its refund policy for paid applications, and many people dislike the new policy. The new refund policy, as stated by Google, lays out a simple principal: that if you do not like an application then you get your money back. The only difficulty is that in order to get a refund on the paid application the user must return the within fifteen minutes of having downloaded it.

So users will have to install and try out an app, and then if they find they don’t like it then they will need to ask for a refund within fifteen minutes.

The effects of this change in policy have already started showing amongst users and now people who download paid applications are actually spending more time reading about the application before they download it.

In Taiwan Google recently stopped showcasing paid applications in its marketplace owing to the continuing fight that arose merely because of the change in the return policy, when it was dramatically reduced to just fifteen minutes from 24 hours.

Now the government in Taiwan is hell bent on making Google modify its application policy for that country and apparently the country has a cyber law that states that anything bought online comes with a seven day refund. Google did not comply with the law and neither has it shown any interest in changing the policy, because of which it was fined $1 million and now only free applications are available to users in Taiwan.

The reasons for which Google changed its policy are still unknown but are totally senseless as an average person would definitely take more than just fifteen minutes to test the features of an application before filing for a refund, and Google’s is the only store with such a refund policy. Take iTunes Store for example, where all sales are considered final. But whenever users have provided genuine reasons for seeking a refund, Apple has responded positively and we have never heard of the company fighting over an application refund issue.

The Amazon App Store uses something totally dynamic and useful in the case of applications as it allows users to try the app on a virtual Android handset before deciding to make the purchase. Hence, the chances of users being dissatisfied with a purchased app reduce greatly.

There will probably be many appeals to Google that it change its refund policy. The company will meet officials in Singapore on Thursday to discuss the issue, but based on how things have developed so far, Google is unlikely to step back.

Nokia announces the C5-00 5MP but very secretly

0

With too many things going on Nokia’s workshop it seems that it is getting difficult for Nokia to announce the launch of new phones as well. The Nokia C5-00 5MP Symbian S60^3 based phone has been announced by Nokia but without any official announcement on the same. The phone has just made it way to teh Nokia developer website where the launch date has been listed as 27 June 2011. And going by the official Nokia communication on the same, well there isn’t any information released by Nokia.

The C5-00 is a 3.5G phone with quad GSM support. The design of the C5-00 is simplistic candybar type with a 2.2″ QVGA resolution TFT display and a 12 key multitap keypad. Even with the newer p[products of Nokia focusing on Symbian Anna or even the Symbian Belle the C5-00 features the Symbian S60^3 operating system at its core running on an ARM 11 600 Mhz processor with a 512 MB of ROM and 256MB or RAM. The storage for the phone is handled by a micro SD card supporting up to 32 of external memory.

The C5-00 features a 5 Full Focus camera or in other words a fixed focus camera capable of video recording as well but with only a VGA resolution at 15 frames /sec.

Additional features include integrated with Nokia Maps 3.0 for navigation, USB 2.0 High-Speed connectivity with USB charging with simultaneous data transfer, 2.0 +EDR, and over the air firmware upgrade as well, but only if the service provider supports that.

The company claims a big 11 hour talk-time and 25 day with this device and if you are a music love this device will particularly suit you with 30 hours of claimed music playback time and up to 89 hours of video playback time.

Although the device is built on the same platform as the C5-00 launched in India couple of time back but the main difference between the two is the inclusion of a 5 Megapixel camera and better battery backup or power performance of the C5-00 5MP. The ship date for the C5-00 is expected by the end of July and the price tag will be upwards of Rs 7500. But until Nokia officially comments and the price and availability nothing concrete can be said about the new Nokia C5-00 5MP.

Lenovo X1 ThinkPad tablet secretly shown in Brazil

0

Lenovo has secretly shown the much anticipated X1 ThinkPad tablet with dock-able keyboard and targeted at the in Brazil. ZTOP, a Brazilian blog reported that Lenovo X1 ThinkPad coupled with keyboard dock does sound similar to the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer and Acer Iconia Tab. The Lenovo X1 ThinkPad tablet is expected to launch internationally next month. There are no details on its Indian launch, availability and pricing as yet.

The Lenovo X1 ThinkPad comes with leather case that wraps around it and also accommodates a keyboard that can be attached with the screen. The ThinkPad tablet sports a 10.1-inch screen supporting 1280×800 resolution display. The ThinkPad tablet houses dual-core 1Ghz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and runs 3.0 Honeycomb operating system.

Acer has already launched its Iconia Tab A500 at a price point of Rs. 27,990 last month. Iconia sports the same 10.1-inch display screen, dual-core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, and Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system. Acer has smartly priced its tablet for about Rs. 27,990 in India and that’s why it is looked upon as a preferable option because of affordable price. Unfortunately the Android version of the tablet doesn’t bundle a dockable keyboard.

Next month we expect the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer tablet to hit Indian shores at the end of next month and it would be one of the first 10.1-inch tablet to be available with the dockable keyboard. With the 10.1-inch tablets, several early adopters still aren’t comfortable using the onscreen keyboard. Also if the tablet makers bundle along a physical keyboard that can be docked or connected via then it could be a well deserved add-on.

Tablet sales in India might be on the rise with advent of Apple iPad, Galaxy Tab and several other models already available here. But consumers continue to look for the best affordable bundle amongst all available options today in Indian market. That is just to see if the tablets can replace their netbooks and heavy laptops.

Google Mobile Search updated again

0

Only two weeks ago, the mobile search page of Google was updated with buttons for local places and services search. Looks like Google hasn’t completed the task yet, as the company has now come out with a new update.

This update has made tabs available on the top of all the Google pages just like the tabs in Google browser, and users just have to tap the relevant tab to go to the relevant Google service.

Also this new update contains an icon which will help users is using search functionality, as they will see options such as tabs for web, images, places and news at the top of the search page. Users just have to scroll down to make the tabs disappear, so they don’t have to worry about their precious screen space either.

Interestingly, some time ago the social side of the search engine Bing was unveiled and now we see one step after another by Google to update its own mobile search site.

In the earlier update, Google tried to address the problem that users tended to get lost while they were searching for something on the move, and the company added short cuts for local businesses such as coffee shops, food joints in the form of easy to notice icons.
