Qualcomm has picked Samsung Foundry as its mass production partner for the manufacturing of the Snapdragon 865. What this essentially means is that Samsung will fab the next generation flagship Snapdragon processor through its EUV-based 7nm process with mass production starting from February 2020.

SiFive has raised $65.4 million in its latest funding round and a part of that investment was from smartphone chipset manufacturer Qualcomm. Qualcomm joins Intel and Samsung as investors in the startup company and can thus create chip designs on the open-source RISC-V instruction set.

Qualcomm Global Product Marketing VP, Don McGuire has revealed the company is working on a Snapdragon Compute Platform which is provisionally named as the Snapdragon 7cx. Upon its release, the Snapdragon 7cx will be a dedicated PC chipset, much like the Snapdragon 8cx but for lower cost PCs.

The next generation of flagship mobile chipset from Qualcomm will feature an external 5G modem. This means there could be a Snapdragon 865 model that will not feature a 5G modem internally which is contrary to what Qualcomm indicated previously.

The Snapdragon 735 will be built on a 7nm process, which will be the first time for a Snapdragon 700-series. The SoC will also be the second Qualcomm chip to be built on a 7nm process, the first one having been the flagship Snapdragon 855 chipset. It'll an Octa-core configuration and Adreno 620 graphics.

The Snapdragon 730 chipset is the second Snapdragon 700-series processor launched this year after the 10nm Snapdragon 712 was launched earlier this year. The Snapdragon 730 packs in an Octa-core setup which combines two 2.2GHz Kryo 470 cores and six 1.8GHz Kryo 470 cores inside an 8nm-built manufacturing process.

The new line of QCS400 SoCs will make way for a combination of immersive audio and on-device artificial intelligence which will make using a smart speaker better all around the house. The list of chipsets to now support 192MP picture captures are Snapdragon 670, Snapdragon 675, Snapdragon 710, Snapdragon 845 and Snapdragon 855. In order to offer photo quality of that high parameters, Qualcomm is incorporating zero shutter lag and eliminating multi-frame noise reduction.

The Snapdragon X55 5G modem is a 7nm chipset which supports 5G NR mmWave and sub-6GHz spectrum bands. This allows devices powered by the chipset to achieve download speeds of up to 7Gbps and upload speeds of up to 3Gbps. In addition to that, the X55 also comes with better LTE speeds of up to 2.5Gbps when downloading.

The Snapdragon 712 is also built on a 10-nm process and houses eight Qualcomm Kryo 360 CPUs with a clockspeed of 2.3GHz alongside an Adreno 616 GPU and a Hexagon 685 DSP. The latest chipset will offer an improvement over the Snapdragon 710 by providing up to a 10 percent increase in performance.

The Windows 10-ready chipset features an Octa-core Qualcomm Kryo 495 CPU as well as the new Adreno 680 GPU, which will be significantly more powerful than Qualcomm’s mobile solutions. It'll be twice as fast as the Snapdragon 850 (3.5 times faster than Snapdragon 835) and will be 60 percent less power consuming.

The Snapdragon 855 will be based on a 7nm manufacturing process, down from the 10nm architecture in the SND 845 and SND 845 models. A smaller circuit means better performance and battery life and the Snapdragon 855 will compete against Apple’s A12 Bionic chipset which is also based on a 7nm process.

Qualcomm is developing Quick Charge 5.0 which will bring support for 32W rapid charging and will also enhance wireless charging by boosting it to up to 15W. QC 5.0 will enable a triple charge system which will distribute charges without dissipating heat and will arrive alongside Snapdragon 855 or Snapdragon 8150.
