Xiaomi has launched the third iteration of its Android One-focused smartphone - the Mi A3 for a starting price of Rs 12,999. For around the same price, Realme recently launched the Realme 5 Pro. Both devices come with mid-range processors, multiple cameras, rear glass design and waterdrop notch displays but which of the two would you want to buy as your daily driver?

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Display

1/ 10

The Mi A3 features a 6.08-inch HD+ AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels along with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and with a waterdrop-style notch. The front panel comes with a contrast ratio of 60000:1, NTSC 102.7 percent colour gamut and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The display has a screen-to-body ratio of 80.3 percent.

Realme 5 Pro features a 6.3-inch FHD display with a resolution of 2340×1080 pixels, 450 nits brightness and a Minidrop notch. The display amounts to a total screen-to-body ratio of 83.6 percent and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3+.

While extra protection on the glass is apreciable, the fact that the Mi A3 packs in an AMOLED display albiet at a HD+ resolution, means the latter takes the win.

Winner: Mi A3 for an AMOLED display on a budget phone

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Design

2/ 10

The Realme 5 Pro features a 3D body design which adopts a polished surface at the back with nanoscale textures made using a five-axis laser. It’s available in Crystal Green and Crystal Blue colours and has a splash-resistant glue and a rubber case for guarding against rain, splash and other daily splashes.

Mi A3 like any phone in the market comes with a glass sandwich design jammed together using an aluminium frame. The back of the phone offers Gorilla Glass 5 and offers a mirrored finish which reflects light in different ways. The phone is available in More than White, Not just Blue and Kind of Grey colours.

The Realme 5 Pro, though without an IP rating specifically mentions splash-resistant and rubber-surrounded enclosures. It also offers a more attractive back panel compared to the subtle reflections on the Mi A3.

Winner: Realme 5 Pro for a 3D body design

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Hardware

3/ 10

The Mi A3 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor along with Adreno 610 GPU. It’s available in a 4GB+64GB and 6GB+64GB configuration which is relatively basic.

The Realme 5 Pro is powered by a newer and more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 AIE processor with Adreno 616 GPU. The device is available in 4GB+64GB, 6GB+64GB and 8GB+128GB configurations, which offers more RAM and storage options for users who need them.

Both phones come with UFS2.1 high-speed storage. But it's the Realme 5 Pro which takes the win since it provides a snappier performance with moderate gaming capabilities than the Mi A3 which isn't really a big upgrade over the Mi A2 in terms of power.

Winner: Realme 5 Pro

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Software

4/ 10

Realme 5 Pro comes running Android 9 Pie with ColorOS 6.0. While Realme is trying to move to its own OS, the interface on the Realme 5 Pro still comes with a heavy skin albeit a stick-like launcher. We can expect some amount of bloatware, customised icons and Realme’s wallpapers, lock screen and charge animations.

The Mi A3 runs on a clean version of Android 9 Pie because it comes under Google’s Android One initiative. The interface resembles that of the Google Pixels with a notification shade, quick toggles, Pie task switcher and a pill-like button in the centre. All preloaded apps are handled by Google including Music, movies, Files and Drive.

The presence of a clean stock Android 9 Pie gives the Mi A3 a clear win over its counterpart. What else? The Mi A3 will also get guaranteed Android updates to up to two years and security updates for three years.

Winner: Mi A3 for a stock Android experience

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Rear Camera

5/ 10

The Mi A3 has a triple rear camera setup that has a 48-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.79 lens, 8-megapixel secondary sensor with a 118-degree wide-angle f/1.79 lens, and a 2-megapixel tertiary sensor for depth sensing.

Realme 5 Pro consists of a 48-megapixel Sony IMX 586 primary camera, a 119-degree 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, 2MP ultra macro lens and a 2MP portrait lens at the back, all of which is enabled with EIS Image Stabilisation and Quad Bayer pixel four-in-one technology.

The Realme 5 Pro has a clear advantage over the Mi A3 since it has an additional macro lens offering a more multipurpose camera unit.

Winner: Realme 5 Pro for a quad-camera setup

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Front Camera

6/ 10

The Realme device features a 16-megapixel Sony IMX471 camera on the front with an aperture of f/2.0 and 1/3.1", 1.0µm pixel size.

Mi A3 features a larger 32MP camera on the front with an f/2.0 lens for selfies and video calling.

A larger sensor generally means a clearer picture and that's what the front camera on the Mi A3 offers.

Winner: Mi A3

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Battery

7/ 10

The Mi A3 features a 4,030mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging while the Realme 5 Pro is backed by a 4035mAh battery with 20 Watt VOOC 3.0 fast charging.

The Realme device offers a faster 20W charging over the 18W bring that its counterpart uses. This means the Realme 5 Pro will charge up in lesser time than the Mi A3.

Winner: Realme 5 Pro for faster-charging tech

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Fingerprint scanner

8/ 10

The Realme 5 Pro comes with a regular fingerprint scanner which is positioned at the back. The one on the Mi A3 is an in-screen fingerprint optical sensor that can sense up to 7.2 μm pixel size regardless of strong light, low temperature or dry fingers.

Xiaomi is offering the in-screen fingerprint scanner on its budget smartphone, a feature that is present on flagship to higher mid-range phones.

Winner: Mi A3

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Price

9/ 10

The Mi A3 is available in two variants - 4GB+64GB and 6GB+64GB for prices of Rs 12,999 and Rs 15,999 respectively. The Realme 5 Pro, on the other hand, comes in 4GB+64GB, 6GB+64GB and 8GB+128GB configurations for prices of Rs 13,999, Rs 14,999 and Rs 16,999 respectively.

Comparing the base variants, the Mi A3 is the cheaper one of the two devices. However, if you wish to pick up the 6GB+64GB configuration, it's the Realme 5 Pro which digs a smaller hole in the pocket.

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Realme 5 Pro: Verdict

10/ 10

Xiaomi has packaged the Mi A3 as the direct successor to last year’s Mi A2 but with lesser changes on the inside and more improvements to camera, design and display. For a starting price of 12,999, the Mi A3 gets you an AMOLED display, decent performance with a Snapdragon 665, 48MP triple cameras, 32MP selfies, an in-display fingerprint scanner and most importantly a clean version of Android 9 Pie with guaranteed updates for two years. However, if you wish for a better camera and overall performance, the Realme 5 Pro is a solid choice too.
