Toshiba developing HD displays for mobiles

0

Following Samsung launching high definition displays for tablets, Japanese electronics manufacturer Toshiba is all set to release its 4 inch mobile phone displays with high definition 720p resolution.

Toshiba is using a new technology called Low Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS) to manufacture displays that will be used for the next generation of smartphones.

The prime benefit of using LTPS technology is that with a density of up to 367ppi (pixels per inch), more detail can be packed into small displays.

Toshiba will be using this in display sizes ranging from 3.3 to 4.0 inches, with formats ranging from wide VGA (480 x 864) to (720 x 1280).

In addition, these displays will have high-contrast (up to 1,500:1); high-colour (up to 92 per cent NTSC), and wide viewing angle of up to H/V 176 degrees/176 degrees.

With the use of this new technology, smartphones need not be larger than 4 inches, which will make them convenient to carry.

And small screens also conserve battery power.

No more new apps for Windows Mobile 6.5

0

The Windows Mobile 6.5 Marketplace, launched in November 2009, will not have any new apps after July 15, when the store will not accept submissions from developers.

The reasons behind the demise of this application market are obvious. First, Microsoft wants to focus on its new OS, Windows Phone 7; and second, the platform is not popular. It had only 7,000 applications at its peak. (Compare that number to the 1 lakh plus apps that has.)

Windows Mobile 6.5 Marketplace will have only around 1,500 apps going forward till a final decision is taken about its closure, which is likely to be in October this year.

An MSDN forum post by Edgeway software, which broke the news, said that it got an email from Microsoft saying that the company will not accept any further submissions to the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace from July 15.

The number of devices using Windows Mobile 6.5 or older is not known, but this was a contender to BlackBerry in the enterprise space. Of late it has not received favours from smartphone buyers, who have switched to new operating systems such as Android and iOS.

A few phones that recently came with Windows Mobile were HTC Touch 2, Acer BeTouch, Acer Neotouch, and Garmin Asus M10. Users of these devices are likely to be affected by this decision.

Even Microsoft has developed a completely new operating system &#151 Windows Phone 7, which is not backward compatible to the older versions of Windows Mobile.

Windows Phone 7 will of course remain the focus of Microsoft in the times to come and will consequently get a lot of applications.

If you are a user of Windows Mobile do write to us to share your feelings about this news.

iPad2 camera not popular, says Flickr

0

The iPad 2 camera is the most unused one, Flickr has said. The photo sharing website, which tracks the camera usage by users by detecting the devices used in clicking the photos, said the iPad2 camera is way too low on its list behind iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4.

The iPad2 comes with low resolution, and the pictures are especially bad when taken in low light conditions. Just after the launch, the iPad2 cameras quickly became famous for all the wrong reasons.

Its picture quality was panned by several websites in the past as well.

The low rating by Flicker could be attributed to the fact that tablets are not convenient for taking pictures, many who have used tablets as camera say it is awkward. Probably that is the reason Apple chose to use low cameras in the iPads, but this is just a speculation.

The iPhone cameras are more popular, which is understandable, since there are more iPhones out there in the market.

The iPad2 has not been in the market for a long time and till now very few numbers of the device has been sold compared to its competitors.

The cameras provided by Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab and RIM PlayBook are better than that of iPad 2.

Now recollecting memories more fun with Retrollecting app

0

A new application, which will help you create your own mash-up of photos, tweets, and status updates, has been launched. The application is called Retrollect and is available free of cost on both and iPhone stores.

Retrollect lets you assemble the highlights of your experiences and create a visual mash-up of that. All you need to do is to grab your photos, tweets, or the status updates that give a play-by-play of the event, which can be a holiday or outing with friends, and then build your very own Retrollect disc to showcase your experience.

You can send recommendations to your friends by creating a disc about your experience, or simply relive those moments whenever you wish to. You can also share your discs on Facebook or Twitter right from the app.

The bad part, according to some users, is that the app seems to be created for and simply ported to the Android, but then its free and there is harm in trying whether you use on iOS or Andorid platform.

Flight Control now available on OVI store

0

Flight Control, a popular video game developed by Japanese manufacturer Namco, has finally made it to the Nokia’s OVI store.

Unlike the Angry Birds, the Flight Control has always been on the little subtler side but has been a major hit in comparison with other games.

This game requires the user to play the role of a flight or airport controller whose only job is to keep the skies clear. He also has to take care of the planes that come from all around the world and ensure their safe landing.

The game has multiple levels of difficulty and it increases as the game proceeds. There are a couple of different maps and places that have been added to the game to give it additional visual appeal.

The publisher of this game, Electronic Arts has released this game on the OVI store and is at present available only for the S60 ^3 devices like the Nokia N8 , E7 and C7. Other Symbian users, however, will have to wait for some time more before the game is made available to them.

The game is not a free version one and those who wish to install it on their device will have to pay. The developer has decided to give 50 per cent discount on the MRP of the game which originally was Rs 100. Hence, the game is now available for Rs 50 but there is no official word as till when this price is applicable.

So word of advice if you love this game and want to download it then think no further as the discount might be for a very limited time period only.

Android update will be better: Nvidia CEO

0

The lacklustre sales of tablet PCs are due to retail and marketing problems, according to chief executive officer of Nvidia, Jen-Hsun Huang. Nvidia supplies processors for Android Honeycomb tablet.

Huang said in an interview that the next round of Android tablets “are expected to be better because the concerns are being addressed”. The new tablets will be more advanced, thinner and lighter, added Huang.

Honeycomb tablets have struggled against iPad since their launch. The chief executive officer of Motorola Mobility, Sanjay Jha, had said that users are not buying Android tablets as there are not enough applications for it in the market.

Apple, on the other hand, is doing everything right. It has dedicated retail stores and partners. It also has billboards plastered everywhere so that users are constantly bombarded with messages about the things they could do if they had an iPad handy.

Poor sales of the first crop of Android tablets across the world have raised serious questions about the device. Prices of Android tablets have also dropped significantly since its launch.

Retailers are now afraid that this may set a dangerous precedent that may lead users to wait some time before they buy in the hope that prices will drop further still.

The specific problem was perhaps the price at which the entry level tablets are being sold. Apple sells the Wifi iPad at about $500 (Rs 22,400); whereas even low end Android tablets are enabled, which makes them more expensive.
