How to set your Android phone’s power button to disconnect calls

0

Many a time we forget to disconnect incoming calls on our smartphones, resulting in unnecessary waste of battery power. But most smartphone users lock the screen by pressing the power button to save battery life. Now, if users can use the same power button to disconnect calls then it would make the battery last longer.

Most smartphone operating systems except are not made for this. Devices running Android version 2.2 and above, however, have this functionality hardcoded into their DNA but it is not activated by default as it is something that requires the user’s discretion to activate.

So lets learn how to activate the auto call disconnect feature on Android devices.

Please note: This functionality is not added by any application software; this is an inbuilt functionality that has been added to the operating system itself. Only Android devices running Android version 2.2 and above will be able to make use of this functionality.

Step 1

Although this little tweak or change in settings does not require you to restart your device, it is advised that you restart your device once anyway, just to let your phone stabilise.

Step 2

After the restart when the device has stabilised, press the settings key. This will bring up the home settings menu.

Step 3

Locate and select the settings tab. This is the shortcut to the main device settings. If you want you can access it through the device’s main menu as well under the settings icon.

Step 4

After you select the settings icon it will open the settings menu. From the drop down menu select Accessibility.

Step5

By default, the device comes with zero accessibility applications installed. So the first time you open the accessibility tab it will prompt you to download additional software; cancel the installation as it is not required for what we want to do.

Step 6

Now select ‘Power button ends call’ and check the box. Come out of the menu. After this, all calls will be automatically disconnected when you press the power button.

Limit on SMS and alternative solutions

0

In order to curb spam messages, TRAI (Telecom regulatory Authority of India) has asked mobile operators to limit the number of SMSes per user per day to 100. The idea is that unregistered marketers will not be able to justify the time and effort to send SMSes to just 100 people and will therefore stop using it as a medium of advertising.

However, in doing so the regulator has put curbs on the normal heavy users of services (typically college kids) who use it to connect with friends, or on professionals who use SMSes for work related co-ordination.

But that’s not the question to be asked now. The decision has been taken and will be implemented, and let’s hope that it meets the desired end and gives us some respite from unwanted SMSes. And for those who send a lot of SMSes, there are still ways to send more than 100.

Especially during the festive season, which is not far ahead, many people will be able to use the ideas mentioned here:

The first and obvious one is to have two cards (using dual SIM phones will be easier) and use both the SIMs to send messages, so you can send 200 messages a day.

However, an easier and more cost effective way is to use web to mobile SMS services like way2SMS.com, 160by2.com, fullonsms.com and whozzat.com. And the good news is that you can access these sites through your mobile’s to send SMSes to groups or individuals free of cost without any limits. All you have to contend with are ads that go along with your SMSes.

These sites send ads after your message and are non-intrusive, and the SMS will be received in your number and name (if it is saved in your friends’ phone). Some of these services like 160by2 have also launched applications for mobiles so it is as easy as sending it from the inbox.

There are also some services like the SMSGupsup, which is social networking through SMS, and allows you to send group messages without any charge. It is one of the largest social networking platforms in India, and has some very useful features. You can read this story for more on SMSgupshup.

WhatsApp messenger available on Windows Phone 7 Mango handsets

0

WhatsApp, a popular cross platform application, has now been released on Windows Phone 7 platform. The app, however, only works with the Mango version of the Windows Phone 7 operating system and can be downloaded on handsets compatible with Mango update.

The limitation is significant since there are so many Windows based handsets that have not received the Mango update, which is expected to be pushed to all Windows Phone users in the next week. WhatsApp runs on most major smartphone operating systems including Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Symbian.

The most convenient part of the is that it uses the phone number of the user as identity, so that users need not go through a lengthy registration process.

WhatsApp sends messages through the internet hence charges are not applicable but users have to pay for the data consumption.

Also, the messaging app scans the address book of the users once, when users sign in for the first time, and tells them which of their friends is using WhatsApp.

In simple terms, it builds the contact list for users quickly enough and in a simple manner, which takes care of the major barrier at the start of app use. Another positive is that the app runs in the background once users are signed in, and new messages are pushed as notifications to let them know who wants to talk to them.

What do the new Facebook changes mean for users?

0

First let’s go through a quick recap of what changes have been introduced by Facebook in its service, for readers to understand the implications for them in future.

Facebook has introduced a new subscribe button through which users may be able to follow even those people they are not friends with. They would now also be able to filter the information they receive from their current friends. The friends list would now be improved, which means users would be able to group their contacts into different lists.

Facebook has also introduced a new ticker which will appear on top of the chat box and will give a constant flow of users’ updates. Anything users read, watch or listen to, can be easily shared with their friends. Last but not least is the Timeline profile, which gives an easily accessible history of people’s life events.

What does it mean for users?

The new moves will encourage users to read, share and listen more on Facebook. All this information goes to the site which will help Facebook figure out patterns in user behaviour and better target their advertisements. Since all the reading, listening and watching activity will be shared automatically there will be a lot more noise for the users to go through than there earlier used to be.

The Facebook homepage looks a lot more like a newspaper. There is a clear attempt to present only relevant updates from friends and people who the users are following. The relevance of updates so far is slightly in question since many users say they are not getting the updates they would like to read.
