Droid RAZR has an 8 image sensor bearing camera at the back for high quality imaging and even the front facing camera promises quality. Also the images clearly show that this smartphone will support networks and will be Verizon Wireless exclusive at the launch.

The specifications indicate that the handset will run the Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread but the launch timing is quite interesting &#151 just a day ahead of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich launch. It’s not new that Motorola has been acquired by Google but the latter is leveraging on the Motorola device and wishes to keep the Android rush at all time high with interesting handsets and compelling mobile OS update in the anvil.

0

Google will announce 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update tomorrow along with loads of features in it. One of the much demanded feature &#151 native screenshot capture will also be enabled with Android 4.0 ICS reported Android Police. After applying the Android 4.0 ICS, users will be able to capture screenshots on their device by simply pressing the Volume Down and Power button together.

Apple has offered native screenshot feature for its platform devices ever since the iOS 2.0 version (then iPhone OS 2.0). Till date, quite a lot of consumers still don’t know how to take a screenshot with iOS devices &#151 iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Finally, same feature will be offered to the Android smartphone and tablet owners. Basically, you can take a screenshot of your smartphone or tablet screen any point of time by simply pressing two buttons together. It may appear stupid but will loads of sense when the same smartphone would be used for mobile payments, buying movie tickets, showing discount vouchers and much more.

It took four years for Android to finally get the same feature &#151 native screenshot capture support, on the device itself and without rooting device or installing any application. Apparently, the Android 3.x Honeycomb tablet OS code does have the native screenshot capturing capability but has been disabled.

Tomorrow, Google will unveil the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update at 10 AM in Hong Kong (7:30 IST) along with Samsung who will show the new Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

Tab Review: BlackBerry Playbook

0

Actually nobody would ever be able to make out what the Research In Motion guys had in their mind while they were naming their one and only tablet – PlayBook. The name sounds a little more appropriate for something like a PSP killer device or some gaming centric gadget. Probably, the name indicates that this device adds a dimension of fun, hence the play, while doing serious business as well.

Look and Feel

As most of its smartphone cousins, the BlackBerry PlayBook comes only in black colour but even with its plainer looks, the PlayBook looks great and makes the users stand out from the market filled with Chinese and Korean rivals. The device is only available in a 7 inch display size – probably RIM choosed this screen size as it considered the best as far as both usability and portability are concerned.

The PlayBook in terms of its weight is on the heavier side but its rugged construction adds a great level of confidence. The PlayBook gets a matte finish rubberized back cover that offers both a better grip and protection against scratches that are very common on devices with a glossy or piano finish devices.

Overall the Playbook has got some nice looks and a sturdy build that is one of the bigger concerns with the users opting for tablet devices.

Display

The display on the BlackBerry PlayBook is a 7 inch, 1024 X 600 pixel TFT display delivering great and vibrant visuals making it good for files, emails to video as well. One of the things to be pointed out here is that the PlayBook has a wide viewing angle and a slight change in the angle of view does not interfere with the image quality while making it easier and more comfortable for the users to use it in a variety of permutations and combinations.

The ambient light sensor does a really good job in controlling the brightness and tweaking it just perfectly on the basis of lighting conditions. Users however can also tweak or manually override the brightness settings by simply selecting the battery icon and changing the brightness level.

The works well in identifying the device orientation and thereby translating it in the display orientation which changes corresponding to the way the device is being held even while holding the device upside down.

Processor and Display engine

The BlackBerry PlayBook utilises the Texas instruments OMAP 4430 that includes a 1 GHz dual core based on the Cortex A9 architecture along with a PowerVR SGX540 Graphics Processing Unit. All in all the combo works well for this tablet offering fluid touch operations and faster execution of commands and application requests.

The PlayBook also features a whole 1 of and 16 GB of internal storage which works well with the TI chipset and enhances the experience for the user. Overall, the PlayBook does the tasks at hand brilliantly without any hiccups or freezes.

During the whole review, the Playbook did not suffer any application crash or even a glitch even while going full throttle on multi tasking with the device downloading an application with two games open in the background plus the web and recording a video as well.
Operating system

The BlackBerry PlayBook is based on a custom built operating system that is based on the QNX Neutrino RTOS (Real-time Operating System). The custom built operating system offers the device a greater flexibility in terms of feature inclusion such as HTML 5, CSS and also includes deeper integration with Adobe flash that enables the Playbook to perform better than most tablets and offer better compatibility as well.

The user interface however is inspired form the 5 which though looks great on the PlayBook and offers great utility and a much sorted application filtering offering a de-stressed usage too.

The device also features the BlackBerry Bridge, which allows it to get the BlackBerry services like Email and BBM through a BlackBerry smartphone via while keeping the device hidden away. Although many people do not like the idea of connecting the phone to the tablet for getting cellular connectivity but personally I liked it. BlackBerry is also planning to get the PlayBook with inbuilt cellular connectivity also but there is no official word on the availability as yet.

Contrary to earlier media reports, there are plenty of applications available for users of this device. All the important application needed for this device are available online and including a few notable ones that include Need for Speed undercover game and the Box.net application that also gets the PlayBook buyers a 50 GB of whooping free storage.

Performance and usage

The PlayBook offers excellent performance that makes usage of this device fun and easy to use. During the course of the review which was well over 20 days, the device underwent a lot of application testing and stressing but the device never hung or froze. If you have opened too many applications at the same time, it might result in slightly degraded performance but unless you are a hardcore user you won’t feel the difference.

The 7 Inch capacitive touchscreen is a major plus point of this device; all the gestures are very accurately registered and translated by the device. The lack of any hardware button is very beautifully handled by the gesture based home screen shortcut plus it gives the device a lot neater look too.

Be it web browsing, video streaming, audio streaming, or videos, the PlayBook performs exceptionally well and impresses on all fronts.

Camera and Multimedia

The PlayBook officially flaunts the biggest number as far as the camera on tablets goes. Its 5 camera works well both in bright light performance as well as in low light conditions. The device also gets a 3 megapixel front facing camera for video conferencing through solutions which can also be used to take self portraits.

In terms of video playback, the device captures 720p High Definition and 1080p Full High Definition video at 30 frame/ Sec.

On multimedia front this device goes the extra mile, with software and level flash integration. It has 16 GB space for internal storage. The 3.5 mm jack provides standard connectivity with any AV source. For video playback, the display gives ample support and if not happy with the 7 inch screen then connect it to any HDTV using the supplied HDMI connector and enjoy 1080p content.

The device by default has a YouTube application that makes the full utilisation of the HD capabilities of the tablet and by default plays HD content from YouTube on this device.

Conclusion

Since the day of its launch, the device has faced many controversies. People are also waiting for the version of it. But nonetheless, the original PlayBook displays all characteristics of a perfect business man’s tool. The BlackBerry Bridge for data and other services is a great tool but not much licked by people who do not have any BlackBerry device.

All in all, personally I licked the device very much majorly because of the performance it gave and a special mention about the battery life of this device.

Although priced a bit high, the PlayBook is perfect for people who want a little more functionality and want to live life in a bigger screen size. You will take initial few days to get used to its gestures and way it works but once you get used to it, handling the PlayBook handles becomes extremely easy.

Only one suggestion goes out for this device and that is if you are a true BlackBerry fan, then the PlayBook is a must to have and once you will buy this you won’t regret your decision.

Handset Review: Airtyme Flaunt

0

AirTyme, which is basically a mobile phone distributor, has come up with its own line of mobile phones for the Indian market, and one of them is Airtyme Flaunt. This device earlier known as Sharp PV 300 and was sold as T-Mobile (a mobile operator) Sidekick LX in USA in 2009.

The phone retains its quality of construction, which is better than any other mobile phone sold in India with a price tag below Rs 5,000. On top of that it is a phone with a large screen and a keyboard that is well designed and is easy to use.

However, the goodness of the phone ends there. Airtyme Flaunt has an operating system, Danger, which is dead and discontinued. In its hey days this operating system was one of the first to have its own store, much before the came into picture and was backed by cloud service operated by Microsoft, which also bought Danger OS in 2008 and later closed it.

The Sidekick series with Danger OS was started in 2002 and ended with this phone in the year 2009. The support for this OS completely shut down in May 2011, leaving this phone too late in the Indian market as now it does not have any application support whatsoever.

So much so that even the Opera Mini that it comes with can’t be upgraded. In its current form, it is a waste of money. Other than the good build quality and high speed 3G connectivity, only disappointments are awaiting the buyers of this phone.

Specifications and Form factor

Airtyme Flaunt has 3G (HSPA) and also support. It comes with a 3.2 inch FWVGA (854 x 480-pixel) screen that is good in quality, in fact still one of the best in the price bracket. It also comes with a 3.2 megapixel camera with a single flash and again the quality is very good for a camera with the resolution.

The phone is very bulky and is in fact bigger than even the Samsung Galaxy S which has a much bigger 4.0 inch screen. Airtyme Flaunt comes with the dimensions of 130 x 60 x 15.9 mm compared to the 122.4 x 64.2 x 9.9 mm dimension of Galaxy S. It is much heavier too weighing 164 grams compared to 119 Grams of Galaxy.

The screen of the phone opens with a swivel action to reveal the full Qwerty keypad beneath. The swivel mechanism is sturdy with steel hinges and is also very stylish, however to dial a number you have to open the keypad and then you have to close it to take a call (if you are not using handsfree) and that is really a bad design. The phone is full of buttons – apart from the keypad, you have two keys on the left side flanking the D-pad which also has the speaker grill. On the right side, there are four keys two on each side of the track-ball.

Being based on an unknown (to Indians) operating system and moreover due to buttons that have slightly unknown symbols on them, users would need some time before get used. The left side of the phone has volume rocker just below the 3.5 mm jack and the power button on the other end. The other side has two buttons on both ends that acts as camera shutter button as well as track change buttons when in media player mode. Sitting at the back side top right corner is the 3.0 megapixel camera along with LED flash. Sharp branding is visible everywhere from the back panel to the pouch and the battery.

This phone looks more like a handheld gaming device than a phone, and with full assortment of buttons well place for a gaming device but it is sad that the phone doesn’t have any games thanks to the dead OS for which nobody develops anything anymore.

Also there are few more surprising and disappointing points. Airtyme Flaunt comes with a GPS chip but does not have any maps, nor can you use Google Maps as it doesn’t support the OS. It has push mail capability but no mail client to use this capability. It supports Microsoft Exchange server as well but again there is no client and the worst part you can’t download it either.

And this adds to frustration as you know that you have a device which is capable of so many things but doesn’t actually support as there is no application. The phone has a powerful for a feature phone with 528 Qualcomm unit.

Performance

There is nothing much that you can do with this phone, as this is a phone that best performed when served by a Cloud based service environment and when there used to be an application store for it.

The Danger OS which served the Sidekick users of T-Mobile for over eight years is long dead after the Sidekick cloud server of Microsoft crashed in 2009, resulting in data loss to thousands of users. Now even basic support is not available for the OS. In fact, there is no download option available in this phone.

Even Opera Mini browser that comes pre-installed cannot be upgraded. You get just one game with it called Bob’s journey, and it is not of much fun after all it was developed before 2009. The media player is nice though with simple controls.

The OS has very easy to use icons appearing in a semi circle in left corner and you can scroll though using the trackball. On the left top (when holding the horizontally) is the setting button which will open according to the menu option you are in.

The speaker of the phone is very weak but clear, while the 1250 battery provides close to 2 days backup.

Connectivity wise, you have 3G and (A2DP) however there is no WiFi which is disappointing. 3G however is the saving grace of the phone and since Opera Mini is the default browser, most of the web applications work fine on the phone.

However since no downloads are allowed, even the Opera Mini will become old and useless pretty soon. What is worse that there is no FM radio. There is an IM client though but it is just an instant messenger and not social networking. Though IM is well laid out with a well designed keypad, it is very helpful in chatting and it supports Yahoo, Gtalk, MSN and AOL.

Verdict

If Airtyme Flaunt was launched in 2009 along with its application store and cloud service, it would have scored 7 out of 10. But this is 2011 and Android phones are cheaper faster and slimmer and comes with Google services on top of that. Besides, this phones’ OS is long dead without even a trace of it remain (except with few phones that Airtyme might have managed to sell). It does not support basic stuffs like Google Map, an email client, or a few applications that even a Rs 2,000 phone supports.

This phone is a total waste of money as it will frustrate you with the fact that it has a hardware that supports even GPS and Push mail, but doesn’t have the software to do so. And I am afraid that Airtyme do not have desire and power to resurrect the OS by providing applications for this platform.

My advice stay away from this phone, wait for their Android phone. If this phones quality is anything to go by, Airtyme’s Android will be better than most low cost makers. The phone costs Rs 4,999 which is justified given the hardware, but since most of this hardware is useless, this price seems way too high.

App Review: Skyfire 4.0

0

Skyfire 4.0 is one of the native mobile browser alternatives available in the Android Market. Fortunately, the Skyfire 4.0 is available for free unlike its counterpart. Skyfire 4.0 for Android 2.0 or higher devices brings following features to the screen – flash video, social sharing, built-in feed reader, user-agent switching, Facebook quick view and Twitter quick view.

Loading up the Skyfire for first time will take you through initial formalities to accept the terms and conditions along with lengthy explanation of features packed in. Pressing Next button three to four times is bit tedious so it would’ve been great if the developers would have placed the list of features more appropriately than in the first run.

Skyfire loads with a list of featured sites that include variety of popular websites from NYTimes to Yahoo. But this list of featured sites can’t be edited and no new links can be added there.

By default, the Skyfire offers full screen browsing and lengthy articles will appear as if you will have to scroll endlessly. The bottom Menu bar dubbed as the “Skybar” has fourteen different items with each offering a distinct function. For instance, the Video button offers links to the videos related to the being watched in the web browser. Users can swipe from right to left on the Skybar to explore different menu items offered.

People who love browsing and sharing links with friends can immediately tap the Like button in the bottom-right corner. User will have to login to Facebook just once. Similarly the Facebook community comes to the aid when you tap the Popular button in the Skybar. For instance, if you are just done reading about the a recipe then tapping the Popular button will take you to most popular recipe website/page that has been recommended (Like-d) by the Facebook user community.

At times, you are not comfortable watching ads and loading several elements bearing web page takes a while. The User-agent switching button just below the Address bar offers user to choose the page to load as Mobile (Android) or full version (Desktop). That will help you save precious seconds and also the data connection usage.

Facebook and Twitter QuickViews offer single touch access to the respective social networks in an overlay style page. Fireplace Reader is a filtered view to access all your Twitter and Facebook feeds which also include images, links and videos. No need to visit the web page or load the app. Access your social feeds right there from the Skybar.

One of the novel features is the “Related Ideas” that analyses the current webpage and offers the user with the search results based on the topics covered in the previous webpage. When it comes to testing, the Skyfire 4.0 scores the same 95 out of 100 marks in acid3.acidtests.org when compared to the native WebKit based Android browser.

In terms of cosmetic look, the Skyfire may appear over loaded but you can always hide the Skybar and make the best of tab browser button (under Address bar) to jump between the tabs. Filled with features, the Skyfire 4.0 is meant for bit advanced web enthusiasts who seek full-fledged web-browser like experience on their Android smartphones.

Download the Skyfire 4.0 from Android Market for your Android Smartphone if you are looking for an all-in-one style user experience.
