3G services agreement will continue: assert Vodafone, Airtel, Idea

0

To provide seamless service to their customers, Vodafone, Bharti Airtel and Idea had got into an intra circle agreement sometime back and will continue to do so till they receive any directive from the government of India to stop it.

In the last couple of day Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and telecom service providers have locked horns over intra-circle 3G roaming. DoT is of the opinion that as of now operators cannot get into a spectrum-sharing agreement as it is not allowed in the country at present. DoT is also examining the legality of agreements that private operators have made to offer nationwide 3G.

In an internal note, though, the DoT had clarified that a UASL (unified access service licence) licensee cannot offer 3G services, declare a tariff plan or acquire customers in a circle it hasn’t been allocated 3G spectrum in.

Spokespersons of Vodafone and Airtel told The Mobile Indian that they will continue to offer 3G services under intra circle roaming agreement which they had signed till the time regulatory issue is resolved and government announces any notification.

Even Idea will also continue to offer 3G services to its customers under intra circle roaming agreement which it has signed with Vodafone and Airtel.

This is a positive development for mobile customers of Vodafone, Airtel and Idea as other two operators Tata Docomo and Aircel have put on hold a similar agreement which they had signed among themselves.

Sharing their views on inter and intra circle roaming, Vodafone and Airtel spokespersons had earlier said to The Mobile Indian, “Roaming agreements – both inter and intra circle – are the norm in the Indian telecom industry since they help a service provider to provide seamless service to its customers.”

Vodafone is offering 3G services in 49 towns and cities of Andhra Pradesh to its subscribers using Idea’s network. In Kerala too it is using the service provider’s network for offering 3G.
The tariff plan provided by Vodafone in these circles is quite affordable despite being made available through a rival network. In Kerala, a Vodafone prepaid customer can avail 50 of 3G data for just Rs 26 a day while Rs 101 gives 200 MB for 30 days, and 1 of data over three days comes for Rs 375. For postpaid customers only plans that cost Rs 100 and Rs 375 are also available.

In Andhra Pradesh, Vodafone users can experience 3G at no extra cost over and above their current 2G data charges.

Similarly, Bharti Airtel has entered an intra-circle roaming agreement with Idea to offer 3G services in Gujarat. Its tariff plans are the same as those it offers in circles where it has its own network.

Basic plans start at Rs 8, which gets you 10 MB for a day and Rs 61 for 65 MB over three days. Standard plans start at Rs 101, which gives 100 MB for 30 days, and go up to Rs 750 for 2 GB of data over one month.

A FlexiShield plan is also available with 1.25 GB of data at 3G speeds and 2 paise for 100 thereafter till you reach a maximum bill of Rs 2,000. Once you have reached this cap you can access unlimited data but at a reduced speed of 20 Kbps.

On the other hand, Idea is offering 3G services in Delhi and Kolkata using Vodafone’s network because it has no spectrum in these cities. Idea’s subscribers can avail 3G in the two metros using sachet or regular plans.

The sachet plan is same for Delhi and Kolkata subscribers. Users can get 20 MB of data at Rs 7, while Rs 52 will buy 100 MB of 3G data for three days. Extra usage will be charged at 5 paise for 10 KB in all the plans.

Apart from that, Idea prepaid customers in Delhi can also buy 200 MB of data for Rs 102, while Rs 100 will get 100 MB if you are postpaid customer. Rs 1,250 is the highest plan value which gives 10 GB of data for a month for both prepaid and postpaid users of Idea.

For Idea’s prepaid subscribers in Kolkata, on the other hand, the choice is limited to only one usage based plan for Rs 103 per 200 MB of data, but postpaid users have more choice than their counterparts in Delhi with maximum plan value going up to Rs 5,000 for 30 GB of data.

Microsoft launches Kinectimals for iOS

0

After releasing My Xbox Live for last week, Microsoft has now brought its famous Xbox 360 game &#151 Kinectimals, to the iOS platform. The same game is also available on Windows Phone 7 platform.

In Kinectimals, players can interact with virtual animals in a manner akin to pets, gameplay includes activities such as teaching tricks to the animal, guiding the animal around an obstacle course, and free-form play. The game is aimed at a young audience, particularly children, and includes eleven different virtual animals all based on wild cats.

“This irresistible mobile experience gives you the chance to use your phone to visit the island of Lemuria and play with, care for and fall in love with your very own cub,” read a posting on iTunes Store.

According to Microsoft, iOS users would get the same Xbox 360 experience while playing the game. The Kinect title is available for Rs 160.

“I’m impressed that Microsoft released this game on iOS and that the price is pretty low for the quality of game you get. I played this game with my daughter for about 20 minutes and she loves it. My only complaint is the load times though I only have the original IPAD,” a user wrote on the iTunes Store about the game.

Microsoft earlier this month released the My Xbox Live for the iOS which will enable Apple users to remotely control the Xbox Live account and the related content using the device.

You can download the Kinectimals game on your iOS device from here.

Skydrive now available for Apple devices

0

Microsoft has released SkyDrive application for iOS devices like iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. On SkyDrive you can store your files and can later access them from virtually any device. With SkyDrive, you can now easily access, manage and share files on the go. You can also upload photos or videos from your iPhone to SkyDrive.

The application will run with any device running iOS version 4.0 and above and is an absolutely free application for download and use.

Users of iOS will get the same 25 of free cloud based storage like that of Windows Phone users. There will be a 100 MB per file upload limit which has been a standard part of the usage policy of this free service. So now, along with the iCloud, Apple users will get another powerful yet simple cloud based solution for their devices in the form of Skydrive.

Prior to this Microsoft had released the iOS version of the OneNote application as well. OneNote allows users to create searchable notes with text, pictures, and bullets. Make and manage to-do lists with checkboxes. Then keep your notes in sync using free Microsoft SkyDrive online storage to access, edit and manage them from virtually anywhere.

Microsoft surely is showing a lot of interest in iOS and we can expect many more such applications and services to be made available for iOS users by Microsoft. There is no information, however, on whether users will get similar services or not.

Clouds and Sheep

If you also like the idea of having your very own sheep farm on your Android tablet then the game, Clouds and Sheep, is just the one for you. Well you cannot exactly classify this as a game as there is no storyline or goals to achieve, except the ultimate goal that is to keep your sheep happy always.

Sheep as usual are non violent but are attention seeking little critters who need a lot of care and time to play with for a happy life. The happier they get, the more stars they produce which users can use to purchase new sheep, food and medicines and many other things to keep them happy.

There are a lot of twists and turns in the game play which are best discovered during the game play otherwise it just spoils the fun. But just as a cautionary advice, keep a tab on the number of sheep as if the sheep are not happy they will not eat nor sleep and ultimately perish and become clouds which certainly a pet lover would not want.

The Indian company does not want to miss the tablet wave either, as it will be launching a 7 inch Android tablet with connectivity and 2 megapixel camera by February. It too will cost Rs 15,000.

HTC Desire HD, Incredible S and ChaCha to get Android 2.3.5

0

HTC UK has started rolling out the latest Gingerbread build for its smartphones, including the Desire HD, Incredible S and ChaCha. Along with the Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, these handsets will also get the latest HTC Sense 3.0 user interface improvements, the handset manufacturer said in an official post on its Facebook page. Recently, HTC also announced the update for HTC Sense 3.0 user interface for its users in Turkey.

Earlier, HTC had also revealed a timeline for an upgrade to the next version of Android operating system &#151 Android Ice Cream Sandwich &#151 next year for a variety of smartphones throughout the world.

With the ICS upgrade planned for next year, it is not much later that the upgrade will be announced in India as well. Indian HTC smartphone users can expect the upgrade to be made available as soon as mid next week as any delay might affect plans for the roll out of the ICS upgrade. But that is just what we are expecting from HTC and nothing concrete can be said about the update until final conformation is received from the company.

Bolt browser discontinued for Android, BlackBerry

0

The free version of third-party mobile web browser, Bolt has been pulled out from all app stores. Thus the free version of Bolt browser is not now available on the Market or BlackBerry app world. Even its Java version is not available.

“The free BOLT mobile browsing service will be discontinued. Unfortunately, the economic circumstances prevent us from running a free service going forward. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your loyalty and support,” a post on the browser’s website read.

Bitstream has also not indicated if a paid version of the mobile browser can be expected any time soon.

Bitstream developed Bolt browser promised full desktop browser style experience on the mobile web with faster page loads and split-screen view.

The browser was one of those several free-to-use mobile web browsers with its own distinct set of features such as the split-screen view, desktop-style web page layout, faster load times with data compression, audio/video streaming and even widget support to anchor social networks &#151 Twitter and Facebook.

Several other free to use mobile browsers such as Opera, Firefox, Skyfire, Dolphin and UC Mobile continue to exist for one or more mobile platforms.

Google working on Apple Siri rival &#151 Project Majel

0

Apple’s voice-based virtual assistant service Siri certainly has grabbed a lot of attention. Hence, Google is working on its rival, a virtual assistant service project called Majel. An advanced version of Voice Actions, Majel will let users perform Siri-like functions with natural speech commands. AndroidAndMe’s Taylor Wimberley said that the first raw version of Google Majel project would be launched early next year.

Apple’s Siri virtual assistant for iPhone 4S grabbed the attention of consumers as well as hackers. Following that, Google has seen a couple of voice based virtual assistants for Android smartphones. However, those apps aren’t half as smart as Siri, though even Siri users face issues while using the app.

Matias Duarte, Google Android’s director of user experience, in a recent interview with Slashgear, hinted that Google’s approach is pretty much machine-like and will offer just another way to interact with the phone using voice. Users will be able to touch, interact and do most things that Siri does. The only difference would be that Majel won’t crack jokes or have a comical bent like Siri does.

Google had acquired Phonetic Arts back in 2010 and since then a dedicated team has been working to bring voice recognition, voice input and voice action features for Google products, including Android.

In the coming year, we will witness a battle between software giants to create a compelling and totally smart virtual assistant with a sharp and rapidly responsive artificial intelligence. Of course, the initial stage might be more primitive and users may find it difficult to adapt to, but in due course of time there will be a clearly visible distinction between Google Majel and Apple Siri.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc HD images surface online

0

Sony Ericsson’s first smartphone featuring 720p HD native display based Xperia Arc HD (LT26i) is no secret anymore. The Mobile Indian has already reported about the specifications and the images of the Xperia Arc HD aka Nozomi. Now GSMArena managed to get some clear and good quality images of a working Xperia Arc HD smartphone. Most likely, Sony Ericsson would be the first handset manufacturer to officially show the 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich based smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012.

Last year at the CES 2011, Sony Ericsson became the first mobile phone manufacturer to show off the Android 2.3 Gingerbread based Xperia Arc smartphone. Of course, by first here we mean the Nexus smartphone made by Google and Samsung.

The Xperia Arc HD will feature a 4.3-inch touchscreen display and bear native 1280×720 resolution. It will feature a 12-megapixel camera with capability to record full 1080p HD video.

The leaked live images nowhere indicate the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running on it. Instead, the reports hint that Xperia Arc HD will come with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. The promotional renders of the Nozomi handset did indicate the Android 4.0 ICS running on it. We will have to wait for the launch early next month to see if it is going to be Android 4.0 or Android 2.3.5 version.

Under the slim chassis, Xperia Arc HD will house a powerful dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm mobile coupled with Adreno 220 graphics and 1 RAM. This will be the first Sony Ericsson smartphone to come with dual-core processor. There will also be a micro HDMI port to connect it to a larger screen display.

So far, no mobile phone manufacturer has officially launched an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich based smartphone. Recently, Huawei told The Mobile Indian that it will release its Android 4.0 ICS based smartphone, named Honor, in February next year.
