Google Translate updated; gets handwriting recognition

0

Popular language translation application, Google Translate, has received a handwriting recognition update that supports English, French, Chinese, Italian, German, Japanese, and Spanish languages.

Google Translate is targeted at users who would like to avoid language problems. The handwriting recognition ability would give users an option other than the traditional voice and text input methods. There are other apps in the market as well, which work on handwriting inputs, like CalliGrapher, Graffiti, CellWriter and MyScript.

The handwriting recognition feature may come in handy for many people, especially those who somehow press wrong keys on their smartphones. Now they just have to just write their text on the display of the phone using their finger or and it would be translated into the desired language.

It’s not clear which new languages Google plans to add to the app. At the same time, just the way other Google services work, the handwriting recognition facility is expected to be improved further.

Google testing Android 4.0 for Nexus S

0

Google has started testing 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on its Nexus S (GT-I9020, GT-I9023) devices. Several Google employees confirmed receiving an Android 4.0 ICS update over the air yesterday for testing.

Adel Soud, a Google employee, had shared the details in excitement over the Google+ social network but later deleted his update. AndroidPolice managed to get the reshare links of those updates.

Google’s Android Open Source Project team has started testing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S, codenamed Crespo. At this moment, developers may not find the Crespo related files on the AOSP file servers because Google engineers are busy testing the update in-house.

Android 4.0 ICS brings a number of new features and improvements. Most importantly, the test would be to check if the onscreen navigational buttons can exist as default or not. If those navigational buttons exist then it would be nothing less but waste of couple of pixels space and also end up confusing several users.

Several users would be interested to see how the Near Field Communications based media transfer feature Android Beam would work with other enabled devices or at least between Android handsets. Besides that, users would like to see if the face-unlock feature works even when men grow a beard.

Since Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has started being tested on Nexus S now, it will take at least a couple of weeks before it is pushed out for consumers. Also, there is more than one version of Nexus S &#151 GT-I9020, GT-I9023 and GT-I9020A/T. The difference between these handsets lies in the screen and the network chip used.

Greenpeace movement goes mobile

Greenpeace, the International environmental NGO, has joined hands with Bangalore based mobile technology company, ZipDial in order to provide a simple and easier method to join their cause in order to protect the environment.

For their latest campaign against the coal mining in regions like the Chandrapur region of Maharashtra or Singrauli, Greenpeace in collaboration with ZipDial is urging people pledge their support in this fight to save the environment. To join this revolution all people have to do is give a missed call to +918049311109 and their support for the movement against mining will be recorded as support.

Those who use their mobile phone will also get a unique reference code which can be shared with other users to gather their own support in support of the protest and gain social recognition in the process.

Commenting on the performance of the campaign, chief executive officer of ZipDial, Valerie R Wagoner said, “We are delighted that our platform has been useful for this important cause. The campaign has produced good results and this is the core advantage of running a campaign on ZipDial platform. One does not need a fancy phone or data connectivity to participate. Any phone with simplest of features can be used to participate in a ZipDial campaign, hence resulting in a high engagement ratio for the marketers spend. Not many platforms can result in such numbers for any campaign with minimum promotional budgets.”

In the past couple of years Voice and data communication methods such as mobile phones, SMS, and even regular landline based telephony has emerged out to be a very powerful medium of social awareness. Anna Hazare’s movement is one of the very successful movements that used same communications channel to popularise their social cause. Following that even Narendra Modi could not ignore the power of telecommunications and got great support of its followers through the use of same medium.

Samsung mulling TouchWiz UI for Android 4.0

0

Samsung appears to be working on the TouchWiz user interface for Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android, according to a website. However, Samsung is yet to respond on the same.

The TouchWiz user interface looks much like the Gingerbread home screen but has some modifications. It comes with a notification tray that allows users to access settings like brightness and WiFi right from the home screen.

Interestingly, some features of TouchWiz are identical to that of the upcoming Android 4.0 operating system including settings menu, used apps list, and the face unlock security option where users just have to look at the phone screen to unlock it.

Other device makers such as HTC, Motorola have also put their own customised user interface on top of the Ice Cream Sandwich.

In devices with TouchWiz user interface, users just have to swipe anywhere on the screen to unlock the device. Also just like other Android devices, in TouchWiz devices, users just have to hold the home button to access the multitasking feature.

Microsoft mulls one OS for all its devices

0

Windows Phone and Windows 8 operating system codes may soon be brought on one platform, reports have suggested. There has been stories from ZDNet and The Register also that one modular operating system would work on all Microsoft devices &#151 which means the idea is to make sure it runs PCs, Xbox, tablets and of course the smartphones.

The speculation has arisen from an email written by the Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer who wrote, “I’m making two leadership changes to ensure we build on our momentum. First, I have asked Andy Lees to move to a new role working for me on a time-critical opportunity focused on driving maximum impact in 2012 with Windows Phone and Windows 8. We have tremendous potential with Windows Phone and Windows 8, and this move sets us up to really deliver against that potential.”

Since Microsoft would like to make sure the Windows 8 software is not pushed to the phone or the Windows Phone 7 software layers are not disturbed either, it seems to be trying to find a middle way.

The new combined version is likely to be called Windows Phone 8 Apollo and it would likely arrive in the middle of the year 2012.

There has been no confirmation on the issue from Microsoft. The product is likely to be simple and may have functionality of both the operating systems. Since the desktop and mobile teams would also be working together on the same Windows stack code, coordination may also become easier.

As far as vision goes, the merger of Windows 8 and Windows Phone looks good. How it pans out in the real world, remains to be seen.
