The 2018 edition of E3 or The Electronic Entertainment Expo, an annual event in the gaming community, is coming to a close. Stacked as E3 always is, with plenty of new releases, E3 2018 was no different. With Sony’s conference having ended just a short while ago, we decided to go through E3 2018 and choose our Top 5 Games of E3 2018 (with the exception of Nintendo DS titles given that Nintendo’s conference is happening tomorrow).

5- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

From the makers of the Dark Souls series, FromSoftware, and Activision (the publisher of Sekiro) comes the long awaited new IP, meant to keep up the Souls series formula of making games that are tough, but fair, with some new twists added to it. Sekiro, or Shadows Die Twice, is a game set in feudal Japan. While we do not know the exact time period yet, we do know one thing: the game looks to be surefire hit.

From extremely impressive visuals, to seamless and really fresh looking combat, which, having built upon traditional dodge and attack combat, with special attacks and moves like Bloodborne, seems to combine certain elements of Dark Souls with elements from Bloodborne, in a Niohesque (Nioh was a game similar to Dark Souls, released in 2017) way, and a setting that is ripe with tales to tell, and stories to weave, this game will leave both diehard fans of the Souls series and new players watering at the mouth. It will be difficult though. Fromsoftware games are nothing if not difficult. So if you are a new player, brace yourself. It’s going to get tough.

With rumours abound, that Sekiro is secretly a Tenchu reboot (a 2003 game made by Fromsoftware and Activision. The same as this game. Hmmm…), Sekiro seems to be shaping up to be a massive success worldwide.

Release expected sometime in 2019.

4- Ghost of Tsushima

From the makers of the Infamous series, Sucker Punch studios comes out with a radically different game from the Infamous series, Ghost of Tsushima. While those games had an almost cartoony, superhero vibe, this game has a very dark and brutal feeling to it, Set in Japan, 1274, this game is centered around The Mongol Invasion of the isle of Tsuhima. The game looks similar to last year’s Nioh (Also a game set in Japan about Samurais), and similar in combat to For Honor( think of the 2D fighting games that are played with joysticks).

It is an open world game, meaning that the player can do the story missions or can just roam throughout he game world whenever they so wish. With the way the game has been presented, the wait seems almost unbearable for anyone who has even a slight interest in games.

The visuals are absolutely stunning, the combat looks to be some of the most fun sword based combat of recent times, with elements from highly acclaimed series such as Assassin’s Creed or Batman mixed in there as well, and the story, from what we know so far, seems very interesting.

Release expected sometime in 2019, PS4 Exclusive.

3- Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red, are considered to be one of the best developers in gaming history. From the makers of the legendary Witcher 3 (Game of The Year 2015), comes Cyberpunk 2077. From the new trailer released at E3 we don’t know much, but what we do get to know, is this.

Set in the year 2077 (obviously), the game seems to focus on the duality of a metropolis, where people can both achieve stardom and wealth, or end up poor and on the streets. While the new trailer focuses on this aspect, the original trailer, released a while back, focused more on a mercenary type was about to kill someone. The game will certainly involve combat of some sort, although that is honestly a given.

The Microsoft press conference where the trailer was debuted was about to end, before it was ‘hacked’ and the trailer was shown. This makes it obvious that the game will have a hacking/technological element to it.

But not much is really known at this point. CD Projekt Red have been very tight-lipped about the game.

The visuals are absolutely mind blowing, which is not a surprise seeing as that same distinction was awarded to Witcher 3 when it released.

It is expected to release sometime in 2019 for all platforms.

2- Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

Ubisoft seem to have outdone themselves this time. The new Assassin’s Creed game, set in ancient Greece, tells the story of a child, sentenced to execution, who somehow manages to survive. The child is a descendant of Leonidas, a Spartan King. We have a choice, between Alexios (boy), and Kassandra (girl), who are both, in terms of ability, on equal footing.

At this point, there is not much value in saying this, but still, the visuals are quite extraordinary.

The game is an RPG( Role Playing Game) in the truest sense of the word. You play the role of the character, you get to decide how the world is and how the story progresses. There are multiple dialogue choices in every interaction, obviously leading to different story paths and of course– multiple endings. With any RPG, comes the obvious choice, are you going to lie to your enemies, convince them, or kill them? The choice is yours.

In addition to this, gear(armor and weaponry) and combat (fighting techniques and abilities) have also been made more customisable than ever before, leading to a truly new Assasin’s Creed experience.

There is a wealth of information about this game flooding the internet already, too much to be covered here. Just remember, it’s new, it’s different, it’s fresh. AC: Odyssey feels like it is refining the AC experience and experimenting wiht new ideas at the same time, in away that leaves one wanting more, every single time.

From what was shown in the trailer, the game seems to be a love letter to the fans, and an amazing first time experience for new players. So whoever you are, whether you play on PC, XBOX or PS4, get ready to jump into some Assassin’s Creed come October 5th.

1- The Last of Us Part II

It really was inevitable. There was no way, an E3 2018 list was going to made, which did not feature the PS4 exclusive, The Last of Us 2. The developers, Naughty Dog have really cemented their place as the best damn game studio on the planet. In under 12 minutes, Naughty Dog both managed to tug on our heartstrings, and shows us the brutal and tough as nails combat and setting of the game.

The trailer shows Ellie, the female protagonist of the first game, sharing a tender moment with a friend. It then alternates between showing us the vulnerable side of Ellie and Ellie ruthlessly bashing her foes skulls in with hammers and stabbing them with knives.

For all those who have played the first game, it leads to quite a nostalgic moment. The little girl we all came to know and love in 2013 is all grown up now, and is fighting it out in a cruel and apocalyptic world all on her own. Like I said, tugs on the heatrstrings.

For new players, The Last of Us 2, is an experience that you simply DO NOT want to miss. There is a reason that The Last of Us 1 is still atop many lists of ‘Best PS4 Games’. That same reason is present in Last of Us 2 as well.

Remember every single thing I said about the earlier games having amazing visuals? Well, forget about that, TLOU 2 beats them out in graphical quality every day of the week.

Coming some time in 2018, this game is going to be a massive success.
