Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime LTE shines in few areas but it is the Nitro 3 that seems to be the better value-for-money device.

The newly launched Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 is priced at Rs 8,130, putting it in the same bracket as the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime LTE, which is retailing for around Rs 8,600. This makes it ideal to compare how these two brands do against each other. Read on to find out more.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime is like any other Samsung phone at this price in terms of design. Since they all look pretty similar, we can skip to the material. The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime LTE has a metallic finish surround and a hard plastic back panel. The bezels are average sized, and the device measures 144.8 x 72.1 x 8.6 mm, and weighs 156 grams.

The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 is a decent looking device from the onset. It has average bezels on the front, and has a wrap-around matt finish back panel, that looks understated and fairly nice. The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 measures 144.3 x 72 x 8.7 mm, and weighs 143 grams.

These are both average looking phones, and there is no reason to like/dislike one over the other.

Display

The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 comes with a 5 inch IPS display while the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime LTE comes with a 5 inch TFT display with of 540 x 960 pixels.

Needless to say, the Nitro 3 with higher resolution is certainly the better handset here.

Processor & Memory

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime LTE is armed with a quad-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 410 which runs with 1 of RAM. The stands at 8 GB to which you can add another 64 GB via a card.

The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 has an octa-core MediaTek MT6592M SoC, clocked at 1.4 GHz, alongside 2 GB of RAM. Its internal memory is 16 GB, to which another 32 GB can be added with a micro SD card.

The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 is the winner of this round, thanks to the one extra GB of RAM, and the significantly better processor too.

Software

The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 runs on Lollipop operating system on the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime LTE runs on Android KitKat with Samsung’s Touch Wiz UI, but it is upgradeable to Android Lollipop.

Both the OS’ are clean and easy to use. The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 wins purely because it comes out of the box with the latest Android.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime LTE runs a 2600 battery which claims to provide up to 14 hours of or 300 hours of standby (network not known). The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 has a 2500 mAh battery which, as per the company, can provide up to 9 hours of talk time or 370 hours of standby time.

Camera

The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 is armed with a 13 primary camera with auto-focus, flash, F2.2 and OV13850 Sensor. In the front of the Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 there is a 5 megapixel shooter.

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime LTE has an 8 megapixel auto focus rear camera with an flash and a 5 megapixel front camera.

Spec for spec, the Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 is the winner by a mile, but usually megapixels aren’t everything, so we will wait for a real world test to call a winner.

Connectivity

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime LTE is a phone with GPS (A-GPS, GLONASS), 4.0, WiFi, WiFi Direct, WiFi Hotspot, and too.

The Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 is a dual-SIM phone with GPS (A-GPS), Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi.

Wrapping up

On paper, the Micromax Canvas Nitro 3 has the better display, better processor and even a better camera. But on the other handset the Grand Prime LTE has a bigger battery, better OS, and 4G too. Some of you might even appreciate the looks of the phone. So if you don’t need 4G connectivity and your prime concern is the performance, then the Nitro 3 should be in your list ahead of the Grand Prime LTE.
