Phone’s aren’t like computers so you can’t install a different operating system (OS) if you don’t like the one that came preloaded. A mobile OS reflects your lifestyle because it determines the choice of apps and phone functionality. The mobile market is fragmented between the following software platforms: Palm OS (and newer webOS), BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android, and iPhone OS. Android, Palm webOS, and iPhone OS are frequently updated with new software features, followed by BlackBerry and Windows Mobile updates. Symbian is updated irregularly and installing the latest update is a bit clunky. Windows Mobile has ascended from the PDA era and some PDA-like UI aspects still show in Windows Phones. Microsoft recently updated Windows Mobile 6.1 to version 6.5, calling a device that runs Windows Mobile 6.5 a “Windows Phone”. Windows Mobile 6.5 includes a revamped appearance, the new lock screen that lets you jump right into a specific alert (missed calls, messages, email, etc), an app store called Windows Marketplace, an improved browser based on IE6 rendering engine, and a free wireless phone backup and restore service called MyPhone. It’s designed to keep Microsoft in the game until a major Windows Mobile 7 upgrade arrives in 2010, packing in a complete UI overhaul and iPhone-esque features, including multi-touch.

When it comes to non smart phones an os is not installed on them. Only a firmware is adapted into them. For example the j2me phones like nokia 5130, nokia 3110 etc. They are also called symbian 40 phones. In samsung the firmware is called generic and one example is samsung champ. When it comes to smartphones in nokia a complete os in installed called symbian 60. Other complete mobile operating systems are blackberry os, i phone ios, android gingerbread, android froyo, meego os, windows mobile 7 etc. Amongst these one of the oldest is symbian 60 which is going to be dropped by nokia. Intel has sidelined its plans to work on the meego os. The os which has been undergoing continuous development and is now being widely adapted all over the world is android. One of the factors is that its open source. So I think android is the best because of the sheer development it undergoes everyday. I os is closed source and hence there are few free apps and developers cannot experiment over it as much as they wish. Android even though a newbie has more than 2.5 lakh apps already and most of them are free.

Nice question sir, well nokia have thir own OS, symbian that powers most almost all of them... Now they have upgraded symbian to Symbain Anna which comes in the latest smartphone from Nokia. Likewise samsung uses both thier own and google Android smartphone... so basically it depends upon your handset manufacture also the on the phone(smartphone or other), and to say the best... Android is really a hot property these days...
