Dear, July 31, 1995: Today West Bengal Chief Minister made India's first cellular phone call, inaugurating Modi Telstra's MobileNet service in Calcutta. The company, a joint venture between India's Modi Group and Australian telecom giant Telstra, is one of the eight licensed to provide cellular services last year, two for each of India's major cities.

India's 1st commercial mobile service provider was the Modi Telstra "MobileNet" in Kolkata. The company was a joint venture between India's Modi Group and Australian telecom giant Telstra. At present, the company has been acquired by BHARTI Group and is part of the AIRTEL brand.

MTNL is the first company to launch commercial operations in India, in December 1998 from DElhi circle.
