As an educator for special populations, the tablet serves as an easy device to read books, comics, lesson activities for the visually impaired. You can make the text larger for ease of reading or identifying objects. There is also the "cause and effect" aspect of lessons presented on the tablet, i.e., identify the square by touching it, and it "bounces' if identified correctly. As a college student, I can download my textbooks (if available) instead of purchasing that $110 book then lug it around campus in my backpack. The tablet provides mobility. I can also record professor's lectures, highlight what I need, and download it to my laptop where I can print it up. Yet, I'm still learning how to use much of it. Haven't quite tapped into my Asus Transformer total potential (yet).

With the burgeoning list of companies rolling out tablets featuring fancy processors, operating systems and unheard of features, these glossy skinned gadgets are bound to hold our breaths. The device often leaves us pondering over the question whether we need it or whats the use of it. Sure, tablets provide instant access to internet, have smaller start up times compared to pc and laptops and are touch sensitive too. But the factor which decides whether its indispensable to you or not is based on whether you want a handy device for taking notes, recording visuals, video conferencing etc. I as a student badly needed a device which would act as a word processor, support various file formats, offer the convenience and ease of a mobile device and be near or little bit as powerful as the laptop. The answer came in the form of tablets. Not only us but executives who need note taking, making live presentations etc have great use of it. It has the processing capabilities of a laptop, but not the weight. It has touch screen which enables easy access to everything. They support magic pads which make note taking convenient. Cameras support video conferencing which is also hard in pc. At the same time the os is still out of the reach of viruses and all of it can be carried wherever you go.

here are going to be so many tablets coming out in the next little while that we may start asking ourselves how important it is that we get one. They’ll all be in different shapes and sizes, options, specs, etc. Obviously, like choosing a computer before, the hardware you bought was likely the result of some self-analyzation on what you plan on using it for. Then came smartphones, same deal. What specs will be good enough for what you plan on doing with it. Is it for business or pleasure? Do you take alot or pictures or not? Video, video chat? Yes, there are going to be as many options with tablets as there are with computers, laptops, and smartphones. In-Stat, a market researcher, did a report called US Consumers’ Attitudes and Behaviours Toward the Emerging Tablet Market, which they stated, “After close to a decade of negligible demand, the tablet market is finally gaining mass market appeal”. Stephanie Ethier, senior Analyst at In-Stat also said; Last year’s small crop of tablets was being touted as potential e-readers; a way to compete against the extremely popular Amazon Kindle line-up…But this next generation of tablets is clearly being marketed as consumer multimedia consumption devices positioned to compete squarely against the Apple iPad. Tablets are predominantly being used for email, internet and multimedia currently, but we are also seeing the business sector look towards tablets for their solutions as well. Deloitte research firm did another report where they predict that 25% of all tablet sales will be by businesses for business activity. 55% of people surveyed who currently own tablets said they spend at least 9 hours a week using them for various things already discussed. So where do you stand? What would you use a tablet for? How long do you think you’d use it a week? maybe the real question here is this…What will having a tablet do for you that you can’t already do on your Android smartphone?

Millions of people already own tablets, more of the devices will surely be gifted this year for the holidays, and next year more tablets like the RIM PlayBook will expand the market even further. But as tablets are relatively new, they still have some evolving to do before some of us know exactly how they fit into our daily lives. Myself, I use my Apple iPad for browsing (which RIM thinks its PlayBook will be better at), plus reading comics and books, and rocking the Netflix Instant wherever I am. But that's just me; these new devices can do much more than what I'm using mine for. In fact, Apple's latest iPad TV ad, is meant to highlight all the things the iPad can do, using words like "cinematic!" and "educational!" Which gets me wondering what you use your tablet for, readers. Or, if you don't have one (yet), what will you use yours for primarily when and if you get one? Learning? Communicating with friends? Pure entertainment? Vote in our poll. Read more:
