The rumor that pretty much every tech magazine and blog is accepting as fact right now is that the iPad 3 will have a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels on a 9.7 inch screen. That’s a lot of pixels to pack in such a tiny display. Keep in mind that many netbooks, which have a 10.1 or 11.6-inch display, use screens with 1366 x 768 resolutions. Android Honeycomb tablets usually have 1280 x 800 resolutions in 10.1-inch displays. And the iPad 2 has a 1024 x 768 resolution. While a higher number does not always translate to a better experience or better quality in tech specs, higher resolutions do have discernible benefits. The more pixels in a display, the higher the pixel density (the number of pixels in an inch). The higher the density, the smoother things look on a screen. Not just video, but also fonts, images, icons, and other elements. When these elements are crisper and sharper, your eyes can tell… to a point. When the iPhone 4 came out, Steve Jobs mentioned a “magical number” somewhere around 300ppi (pixels per inch) where, if you hold a device a normal distance away, your eye can’t pick out individual pixels and will see the clearest, best version of what’s on the display.

Apple, in order to maintain a leading position, plans to launch iPad 3 in the fourth quarter by shortening the iPad Product life cycle. And also, try to push the screen resolution of iPad 3 to 2560x1920 , which is the ultimate resolution a 9.7 Inch Panel can achieve and doubles "Full HD". Apple might try to reach a resolution of 2560x1920 in the new device. That resolution would be over 6x the number of pixels of the current iPad, and 2.5x the linear resolution in each dimension. The closest display we've heard of is Samsung's announcement of a 2560x1600 10.1" LCD display in May. Apple has been rumored to be bringing a "Retina" display to the iPad 3, though there has been little talk of it recently. To further add to the doubts, component manufacturers seem to be expecting the iPad 3 to arrive in 2012.

Apple didn't upgrade the iPad's resolution with the iPad 2, but that could change with its third-generation tablet. The iPad 3 could get its resolution beefed up in a big way—2,048-by-1,536 pixels, according to 9to5Mac. The blog points to the Korea Times, which cited a "source close to the talks," who said Apple will keep the 9.7-inch screen, but ramp up the resolution beyond full HD (currently 1,920-by-1,080). Apple is reportedly looking to either Samsung or LG to supply these high-res LCD displays, and Apple is already testing displays from the two companies at a lab in China, according to the Korea Times. Given that Apple and Samsung are currently embroiled in a legal battle over patent and trademark infringement, LG might have the upper hand if this rumor has any truth to it. It's been rumored in the past that Apple and Samsung would team up to bring Samsung's AMOLED technology to the iPad 3's display, but the Korea Times said Apple decided against AMOLED displays because they aren't full HD, they have "shorter life spans, and are easily contaminated." In other iPad 3 display rumors, there's also been buzz that the third-gen device will get a 3D display. So just when will Apple launch the iPad 3? There has been some indication that Apple won't launch the iPad 3 this fall, but rather a moderately upgraded version of the iPad 2, possibly called the iPad 2 Plus. However, there are other sources that claim Apple will debut a fully upgraded version of the tablet this fall, breaking its usual habit of an annual product update cycle. Regardless of when Apple unveils the iPad 3, there is some evidence that the company could be stepping up iPad shipments But as usual, Apple wouldn't comment on the rumors.

It's been a while since we've heard a decent iPad 3 rumour, with most of the reports emerging from less than reputable sources. Luckily though the latest juicy next-gen iPad rumours come courtesy of a story from The Wall Street Journal: a reputable source if ever there was one - it's owned by Rupert Murdoch after all... Anyway, getting to the point and its report suggests a double resolution from the original Jesus tablet and its 2011 sequel, at a whopping 2048x1536. Still at 9.7-inches, according to "people familiar with the situation" the screen orders are in, with one manufacturer signed up "for about 1.5 million iPad 3s in the fourth quarter" - hinting at an early 2012 release. They are murmurs that the iPad 3 could even launch this year, but there has been increasing reports suggesting a delay to that idea thanks to part shortages - most notably the display. Samsung probably isn't the display partner given the recent spat between the two giants, even though we told you how, back in May, Samsung unveiled the first ever 10.1-inch, 2560x1600 resolution LCD, with a whopping 300dpi. LG has been the dominant panel maker for Apple's mobile devices in the past though, and there's suggestions that it has similar tech up its sleeve too.

the new Apple iPad 3 arrives early next year. According to the most recent Apple rumor to hit the internet the iPad 3 will feature a 9.7-inch display that has twice the resolution of current iPad 2 devices. The rumor comes from several unnamed sources who say Apple has already ordered enough of the displays and other required parts to build 1.5 million of the devices. Speaking to the WSJ one of those suppliers said: “Suppliers will ramp up production and try to improve the yield rate for the new iPad in the fourth quarter before its official launch in early 2012,” said a person at the supplier.
