IMEI is short for International Mobile Equipment Identity and is a unique number given to every single mobile phone, typically found behind the battery. IMEI numbers of cellular phones connected to a GSM network are stored in a database (EIR - Equipment Identity Register) containing all valid mobile phone equipment. When a phone is reported stolen or is not type approved, the number is marked invalid. The number consists of four groups that looks this: nnnnnn--nn-nnnnnn-n The first set of numbers is the type approval code (TAC). The first two digits represent the country code. The rest make up the final assembly code. The second group of numbers identifies the manufacturer: 01 and 02 = AEG 07 and 40 = Motorola 10 and 20 = Nokia 41and 44 = Siemens 51= Sony, Siemens, Ericsson The third set is the serial number and the last single digit is an additional number (usually 0). IMEI number makes usage of mobile phone legal in India and thus before buying a mobile phone check the IMEI number and procedure is as illustrated below:: 1. Dial *#06# – A 15-digit number will be displayed on your handset. 2. One can validate the IMEI and for that one has to send an sms IMEI <15 digit IMEI number> to 53232 (Rs. 3 per SMS) For eg; IMEI 351869910223340 to 53232 Message displayed for correct IMEI – Success!! Message displayed for incorrect IMEI – Alert!!! Invalid IMEI (tough luck) However not to worry n case of an invalid IMEI, as one can either buy a handset with a genuine IMEI number or can follow the below mentioned instructions: Visit only authorized GII (Genuine IMEI Implant) centres, set up on Government approved process, which can implant new genuine IMEI on the handset. Pay a nominal charge of Rs. 199 (all inclusive) and obtain a receipt. Carry your handset with a valid identity proof for identification purposes while visiting these centres. As a moral of the whole story do not buy Chinese phones as they do not have IMEI number or has a fake number and it is illegal to use the same in India as it is against the security interest of the nation. To chek the imei no. of your mobile follow d given instructions Starting from the right, double every alternative digit Eg. 353479020749478 is any imei no.den Leave 8 as it is strt wid 7(14),leav 4,come to 9(18) & so on The nos. u get sum up all 3+(1+0)+3+8+7+(1+8)+0+4+0+(1+4)+4+(1+8)+4+(1+4)+8=70 It will alwyz yield a no. divisible by 10(dis means imei is correct) Retrieving IMEI Information from an older Sony or Sony Ericsson handset can be done by entering these keys: * Right * Left Left * Left * IMEI information on BlackBerry and on new Sony Ericsson devices can also be found by going to options, then status. On Android the IMEI information can be found under the "About Phone" menu option in the settings menu. Conclusion is dat we can find our stolen mob by providing d imei no. 2 the company whose set it is

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 17 or 15 digit code used to identify an individual mobile station to a GSM or UMTS network. The IMEI number provides an important function; it uniquely identifies a specific mobile phone being used on a mobile network. The IMEI is a useful tool to prevent a stolen handset from accessing a network and being used to place calls. Mobile phone owners who have their phones stolen can contact their mobile network provider and ask them disable a phone using its IMEI number. With an IMEI number, the phone can be blocked from the network quickly and easily. It is important to note that swapping a SIM card will not stop a phone from being banned. IMEI numbers are stored in the phones themselves, not on the SIM cards. An IMEI is only used to identify the device and does not relate to a specific individual or organization. Other numbers such as the ESN (Electronic Serial Numbers) and MEID (Mobile Equipment Identifiers) can link an individual to a phone. Usually, an IMSI number stored on a SIM card can identify the subscriber on a network. There are several ways in which you can locate your mobile phone’s IMEI number. The IMEI can usually be found on the handset, beneath the battery, sometimes printed on a small white label. Another way to easily locate your IMEI phone is to dial the following sequence of numbers into the handset: *#06#. If you have a Sony Ericsson mobile phone, you can retrieve the IMEI by pressing the following key sequence: right,*, left, left,*, left, *, left.
