In my opinion, there are only three things and hence only three tablets which needs to be considered. Type 1: A tablet for home use, which works on WiFi, and serves as easy browsing and media consumption device. The tablet you are looking for is Milagrow TabTop. Buy one with 4GB internal storage, you can anyways extend the storage upto 32GB. Type 2: A tablet for semi-business use or when the primary use is going to be of video chat over 3G. The tablet you are looking for is Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. You can do minor document editing while travelling and can easily skype over 3G. Type 3: The content consumption device. Unfortunately there is not even a single android tablet which can take the mighty iPad. And no, I am not talking about hardware. I am talking about the ecosystem. iPad has maintained the top spot in tablet pretty easily..and the main reason is the ecosystem. You should note that, these three categories have their own niche market. Which is the exact reason for sustainable growth of 7-inch tablet growth. For detail..read on.. Best tablet under Rs. 10000 in India. June 2012: All the tablets in this category are of Type 1 viz. a tablet for Home use, primarily on WiFi. There are four tablets in this category which compete for the top spot and all of them are from Indian company. Micromax Funbook, HCL U1, Milagrow MGPT04 and Karbonn Smart Tab 1. All of these tablets have latest version of android in it, the Ice Cream Sandwich. They share some more similarity, all of them have Cortex A8 processor, 4GB internal memory, 7 inch capacitive touch screen. Let’s see where does these tabs score and where they stumble. If I have to choose one tab of these three, it has to be the Milagrow MGPT04 tab. This tablet has it all, good build quality, full size USB port, 1.3MP front camera, faster WiFi (802.11n), 3G via USB dongle. Unlike other tabs (16:9), this tablet from Milagrow has screen aspect ratio of 4:3. But it is not deal breaker, in fact, because of this aspect ratio, it easily fits in bag, purse etc. Also, there are many India specific applications loaded by default. All these things make this the best tablet in 10k range. Karbonn Smart Tab 1 is close..very close second. The main reason it does not top the chart is absence of GPU. Apart from this, everything is in favor of this tablet. It has Ice Cream Sandwich out of box, decent built quality, good 3700mAh battery, 3G dongle support, 2MP front video camera and very competitive price. Karbonn mobile have decided to make it’s own space in Indian tablet market. And Karbonn Smart Tab 1 is good start. Micromax Funbook has to have special mention as it is the “least costing decent android tablet” in the market right now. There are only few areas where Funbook falls behind the Milagrow tabtop. For one, the build quality is very flimsy and the product feels cheap. Battery is only 2800mAH. And the 3G dongle which works only with Tata Docomo. There is also HCL ME U1 in this price range. Biggest downsides of this tablet is, it doesn’t have Google Playstore. Though we can side-load the applications. I would prefer Google Play to HCL app market. You can also consider: Blackberry Playbook. It has primary and secondary camera and greater battery life. In Short: Go for Milagrow MGPT04. Best tablet under Rs. 15000 in India. June 2012: Even in this price segment, you shall find the tablets of Type 1, i.e. for Home Use and primarily on WiFi. You have only three options to choose from. The iBall Slide, Milagrow TabTop 16GB, BB Playbook 16GB. iBall Slide is inferior to Milagrow tabtop in terms of OS, GPU, internal storage, video chat camera, so let’s chuck that out. We have only TabTop and Playbook. Comparing Milagrow MGPT04-16GB to Blackberry Playbook 16GB on plain hardware specs would be wrong. These tablets are from different eco system. Android is budding OS and have created good ecosystem for Indian market. Blackberry on other hand is failed to create such ecosystem. Hence, I am more inclined towards buying an android tablet. Still, let’s consider these tabs. Milagrow MGPT04-16GB is same model as discussed in under 10k segment with only difference being, instead of 4GB, this model comes with 16GB internal memory. 2k for 12GB extra..sounds good to me. Now coming over to Blackberry Playbook 16GB WiFi. Against Milagrow TabTop, hardware wise, Playbook has advantage of better processor and better GPU. It also has more RAM (1GB against 512MB of TabTop). Better Screen resolution and hence crisp graphics, 5MP primary camera and 3MP secondary camera. Blackberry business features and last but not least, solid 5300mAh battery. All in all, Blackberry Playbook beats the hell out of android competition..hardware wise. BUT, there is one big downside for playbook. The app market in playbook is at nascent stage, there are only fraction of apps if considered against android or apple app store and the applications are pretty expensive. There is a way to side-load android applications in Playbook, but that is not recommended for casual users and requires technical know-how. You can also consider: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. Big advantage of SG Tab2 is, it has calling capability. In Short: If you are buying tablet for content consumption and entertainment then Milagrow TabTop is better buy. Else for browsing, watching movies and business purposes Blackberry Playbook is preferred. Best tablet under Rs. 20000 in India. June 2012: This segment has only two tablets Dell Streak and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. Both these tablets are of Type 2. Meaning these tablets have calling capability. So, you can get a bluetooth headset and make this tab as your second/business phone. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is successor to it’s legendary Galaxy Tab. Tab 2 is minor upgradation to it’s predecessor Galaxy Tab. Dual core processor is the only welcome change in Tab 2. But, surprisingly it is the only tablet of 7inch which has calling capability. So, you don’t have other option. All said, it is still decent buy. Those, who don’t want to spend much to buy Samsung Galaxy Note buy Dell Streak. And it makes total sense to save around 12 thousand rupee. This 5 inch phablet/tabphone is decent gadget. It’s major negative point is, it still runs, android Froyo (2.2) which by the way is the worst android flavor yet. But worry not, you will find plenty of custom ROM in xda forums. You can Consider: For about 22k you can buy a brand new iPad 2 16GB WiFi or Sony Tablet S 16GB WiFi. In Short: Go for Galaxy Tab 2 if you want a tablet which can also act as your second phone. Else go for iPad 2 or Sony Tablet S. Best tablet under Rs. 25000 in India. June 2012: Apple iPad 2 16GB WiFi is the best tablet under 25k. You get very good 10 inch screen, access to millions of applications, many of these specially designed to take advantage of 10 inch screen. 10 hours of battery life of constant use is sufficient to take you through complete day. There are couple downside of this tablet like, First one is not so easy media management, you cannot just drag and drop music in folders but have to synchronize music strictly through iTunes. It does not support avi files for watching movies, and no there is no app to view avi files. It is not possible to transfer such file to iPad. You must convert the movies before you transfer it to iPad. Second one is, it does not have a 3G connectivity option and neither does it have option of dongle. But if you have WiFi hotspot in your mobile you can use it to access net. The reason it beats Sony Tablet S is because of ecosystem. apple has better applications suited for tablet. And if you have mac at your home than iPad is best content consumption device. For rest, read on… To fight mighty iPad 2 we have Sony Tablet S 16GB WiFi which comes at same price of 22k. It is light weight, well designed and hence easy to hold. 10 inch screen is good to watch movies.
