Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal has said that mobile phone users will not have to pay any charges on roaming from next year. "Roaming will be free in 2013. We have to get Cabinet approval and then it comes back to us. And then it will be floated," he said today at a press conference. The government had earlier this year announced "one nation, free roaming" as part of its National Telecom Policy 2012. The policy, approved in May, aims to abolish roaming charges and allow mobile phone subscribers to use same number across country without having to pay extra charges for services once they are outside their telecom circle.

Roaming has been changed by mobile operators. Nowadays there has been a stop to roaming charges. BSNL introduces roam free plans throughout India. And Docomo offers roam free for a validity of 2 months at rs 46

The free roaming facility, announced a few days ago by the Union Minister for Communications and IT, Kapil Sibal, is going to be a reality from this July. With free roaming and other consumer-centric initiatives, Sibal bats for affordability as the core of the new policy, which may have a few ramifications on service providers' revenues. But it is said that increased usage will suffice their apparent loss. Surprisingly, the state-owned BSNL has already dropped roaming charges on one of its prepaid plans. Similarly, private player Airtel has started a campaign in the Mumbai-Gujarat Highway and put up advertisement hoardings about free roaming between these circles. Airtel's free roaming ad gains significance at a time when newspapers are abuzz with the reports, which say Indian telecom service providers might resist the government move to push for free roaming scheme, as it would adversely affect their revenues. Almost all the telecom companies today charge Re. 1 per call for roaming. The new regulation would, however, put an end to the consumer's roaming woes.

Dear friend, This free roaming amendment is currently in front of TRAI to get passed. The exact date of it's application is not declared yet. But, the expected date will be in last 3 months of this year. Till that time, enjoy the paid roaming... LOL..

Roaming will be really free in INDIA someday, it will take a bit time because all the telecom operators are against it as nearly 10% of their income is from roaming. So of course they will be defending the decision of government. But DoT(Dddpartment of Telecommunication) has got the nod of TRAI( Telecom regulatory authority of India) for free roaming so we will surely see free roaming in coming future.
