Symbian is an operating system, providing the native software platform of the phone. Java is an virtual machine powered application framework that runs on top of the operating system and, at least in theory, allows developers to design applications that can run on any machine, irrespective of the underlying OS. An application written directly for the OS (be it Windows or Symbian) is faster and more powerful (access to more low level features) but will only run on the system for which it was designed. A Java application is slower, more limited in features and, despite of the initial promise, will not run on too many systems either.

Symbian phones are more preferable to java phones because of so many reasons. Most symbian phones has inbuilt gps (global positioning system) in them that help's u find ur way and java phones don't. Java phones can only receive .jar and .jad while symbian phones can recieve .jar, .jad & .sis . Symbian phones have lager screens than java phones. So symbian phones are the best.

By the terms you have used like java and symbian your question mainly pertains to nokia phones but it can be applied to all phones. By java phones I suppose you are talking about s40 nokia mobiles. By symbian phones you are talking about s60 mobile phones. There are several points of difference between them. In symbian phones we have a complete operating system for the mobile which makes it do several things like support multi tasking, play high end games, read and support various file formats easily like pdf, word, excel etc. Not only that symbian os is for the smart phone market. All the high priced glossy devices which you see around like the nokia n95 nokia n73 etc are all based on this os. On the other hand when you want a phone with basic functionalities like some music, a bit of gprs and no hi fi stuff you can best settle down with s40 or java phones like nokia 5130 nokia c2 01 or samsung champ etc. The java phones do not support multi tasking, or support any other format than j2me. They only have an ill developed os structure in them called the firmware. Basically if you need a phone like a pc go for symbian devices otherwise if you are happy with talking, smsing and occasional gprs go for java phones.

Symbian is an operating system for Cell phones, just like JAVA. Symbian phones are much faster, safer, feature rich as compared to JAVA ones. JAVA is used only in low-end phones. Nokia N series id Symbian. There are series of Symbian phones like: S40, S60 etc. latest OSes are very fast and capable of supporting high end applications.

JAVA phones, technically the s40 series of nokia doesnt support multitasking except music player, is not supported for running lots of apps, whereas SYMBIAN is trademarked one for multitasking with lots of apps.
