A modem modulates outgoing digital signals from a computer or other digital device to analog signals for a conventional copper twisted pair telephone line and demodulates the incoming analog signal and converts it to a digital signal for the digital device. In recent years, the 2400 bits per second modem that could carry e-mail has become obsolete. 14.4 Kbps and 28.8 Kbps modems were temporary landing places on the way to the much higher bandwidth devices and carriers of tomorrow. From early 1998, most new personal computers came with 56 Kbps modems. By comparison, using a digital Integrated Services Digital Network adapter instead of a conventional modem, the same telephone wire can now carry up to 128 Kbps. With Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) systems, now being deployed in a number of communities, bandwidth on twisted-pair can be in the megabit range.

modem (modulator-demodulator) Modem is actually one of the most important hardware devices used in the computer especially for the purpose of networking of the internet. Modems are used to modulate signals of analog types so as to be able to encode the digital information from it. Modems are also used for demodulation of the signals so as to decode the information transmitted. Therefore it is for the soul purpose of transmission of the signal easily so that it can be decoded to reproduce the digital information. The classification of modems is done on the basis of the information that can transferred in a given time period by them which is usually measured in bps, or bits per second. Modems are now used by the internet users, which preferably run faster than such as the cable and the ADSL modems. These days the modems area great benefit to be used in the telecommunication systems with the launch of the radio modems. These modems are the microwave modems and can transmit even more than a hundred million bits per second, which is a very high speed for any modem to work on. The launch of the optical fibers has given rise to the optical modems which are now used for the purpose of transmission of data over undersea optical fibers. These modems have unbelievably high rate of transmission, which can reach up to about a billion bits per second. Although modem internet connection has been replaced over the recent years with broadband, modems still hold a vital position is certain other aspects of the modern world such as the space telecommunications and of course in the telephone communications

MODEM is abbrivation as Modulation and Demodulation. A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data, the transmission is in the form of analog signal & converts to digital signal which is stored by computer.eg mobile phone, telephone,data card, cable lines etc.

A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Modems can be used over any means of transmitting analog signals, from light emitting diodes to radio. The most familiar example is a voice band modem that turns the digital data of a personal computer into modulated electrical signals in the voice frequency range of a telephone channel. Wireless modems come in a variety of types, bandwidths, and speeds. Wireless modems are often referred to as transparent or smart. They transmit information that is modulated onto a carrier frequency to allow many simultaneous wireless communication links to work simultaneously on different frequencies.

To be simple yet understandable, modem is a device that connects you to the internet. It receives signals from WEB which are in a secured form, converts them to readable form for us. and when we send some information, it convert it to some secure form and sends it so that nobody can intercept it. it a device that lets to login in themobileindian.com as well.LOL....

Actually MODEM is a device to use modulation and demodulation of signal but a wireless device which is used to connect to internet is also called a MODEM. For exp. Tata photan plus, reliance net connect, mts mblaze e.t.c
