The difference between a dual ACTIVE sim and a dual STANDBY sim cellphone is in the ease in switching sim cards. In the dual ACTIVE sim cellphone, the user can easily change from sim1 to sim2 in one press of a switch. User can return to sim1 again by just pressing the switch sim key again. But in the dual STANDBY sim cellphone, the user has to do the following: 1. User presses switch key to change from sim1 to sim2; 2. User has to specify that the new default sim is sim2; 3. Cellphone will show message that the change in default sim will restart the phone, and asks for a confirmation from the user; 4. Once the user confirms, cellphone restarts, and user waits for the cellphone to become ON again; 5. Once the cellphone is ON, user can use the cellphone using sim2. In case the user wants to change back from sim2 to sim1 again, the user has to go through the above-mentioned steps once more. Thus, a dual ACTIVE sim cellphone is more convenient to use.

Dual SIM Phones Supporting Dual Standby: It was very normal for one cell phone to accommodate a piece of SIM card. However, that happened before. Since the birth of dual SIM dual standby mobile phones, one SIM cell phones will be out of date soon. dual standy means that a mobile having dual sim can operated at the same time by a single mobile, dual sim allows the use of two services without the need to carry two phones at the same time & dual active means that it allows the device to be connected to both netwoks at the same time (it's using transceiver).

DUALSIM mobile phones are fitted with 2 SIM CARD slots allowing DUALSIMTM operation of the phone. Mobile phones with DUALSIM Card capability have the advantage of allowing both SIM cards to be active simultaneously and allow calls to be received on either number, unlike adapters that require you to switch between phone numbers. Normal GSM phones contain a single transceiver; DUALSIMTM phones have DUAL TRANSCEIVERS and display SIGNAL STRENGTHS for both networks. A phone with a single transceiver cannot be converted to simultaneous DUALSIM operation; at best you can only store both cards in an adaptor and manually switch between phones. The use of aftermarket adaptors in SINGLE transceiver phones could void the warranty of the phone and are not guaranteed to work on all phone models.

A dual SIM mobile phone is one which holds two SIM cards. Initially, dual-SIM adapters were made available to use in regular mobile phones to allow them to contain two SIMs, and to switch from one to the other as required. This combination is called a standby dual-SIM phone. The first Dual SIM mobile phone was Benefon Twin manufactured by Benefon in Finland. It was launched on the market in 2000. More recently, some phones have been produced that can natively work with two SIMs, both of which may be active at the same time. These are active dual-SIM phones. There are also some Chinese triple-SIM phones.[1] Akai Trio is the first phone with triple GSM SIM slots [2] Dual-SIM operation allows the use of two services without the need to carry two phones at the same time. For example, the same handset can be used for business and private use with separate numbers and bills; or for travel, with an additional SIM for the country visited. Using multiple SIM cards allows the user to take advantage of different pricing plans for calls and text messages to certain destinations as well as mobile data usage.

Dual standby and dual active mode allows you to keep on two different services at a time for ex- you can set dual sin active mode in your dual sim phone , you can set dual network standby mode in your 3g phone which keep your 2g as well as 3g/UMTS mode on. One active only allows to keep one service active.
