2G ( also known as EDGE) is a 2nd Generation Data Network It is not as fast as a 3g network. it can get speeds up to 2.2 MBS, it also works better than 3g if 3g doesntd have a good signal because EDGE doesnt require as much signal to function 3G- ( aka HSPA) is a 3rd generation network, it is much faster than a 2g network, but requires alot of signal to function to the fullest. can get up to 7.2 MBS (much faster than 2g) but can also crap out on you alot

2G and 3G cellular networks: Their impact on today’s enterprise mobility solutions…and future mobility strategies Most networks now offer a 3G service, but I was wondering what exactly was the difference between 2G and 3G service. Does 3G actually offer any more than 2G, or is the only difference the speed of data transfer? Also, to receive 3G signals, is all that is requiered is a 3G phone, or is the SIM card different also? I used to have a 3 Phone about 5-6 years ago when the first ones came out, but it was crap so I sent it back, and never quite got the gimmick.

Though 3G is much better than 2G in terms of speed, I would suggest to go for 2G because the coverage area is not very large for 3G, lowest price, and the speed also not to the level the operators claim. You can keep your smart phone always online at low cost.

3G is better than 2G. You can do very very fast internet browsing , video calling and good quality video streming with 3G. This true that 3G costly but it is faster than 2G. So i will suggest you to choose 3G. Now its your choice.

You might be surprised to learn that 3G was in use in japan from the year 2001. There is no double opinion that 3g is much better. First you have the advantage of high speed internet. A 4mb song will take around 15 to 20 secs to download. At the same time it will at the highest speed of 144Kbps(which is never possible in india) take more than 10 minutes. The second thing is greater internet telephony like video calling. You can stream live matches and tv shows on your mobile and even internet gaming too. None of this is possible on a 2g phone. But at the same time the disadvantage is the high cost. In airtel itself the 3g lowest 3g data plan is of Rs. 9 for 10MB/1 day. You are charged Rs. 750 for 2GB data/month. But on 2g network you get 100mb for rs 10 and at rs 149 2gb of data. Moreover the 3g phones do not come cheap.

3G uses a much broader band spectrum and hence has much higher bit rate. Hence if you want to choose a network for data transfer and the Internet, then I would recommend 3G. Otherwise, if the phone is needed for SMS and phone calls then go for 2G phones. But, in the recent future, if the video conferencing becomes such popular that everyone uses smart phones for the application. Hence as a whole I would say that 3G is by far the best. But please keep in mind that the transition period between 3G and the NEXT 4G is very short

3G is the best . Because 3G has higher "bit rate" than 2G.
