You can use your Windows Phone to connect to an available Wi-Fi network in your location, in addition to connecting to a cellular network. Wi-Fi connections are typically faster than your cellular data connection. This can save on costs if you're not on an unlimited data plan, or if you can't connect to your cellular network for some reason. Some Wi-Fi networks are secured and may require a password before you can connect to the network.

Need could vary but lets talk about a general situation where I was required to find the MAC address of my mobile phone and while doing so the idea of this post came up to my mind. It was when I was configuring my Wi-Fi modem to make it more secure by enabling the MAC filtering option. So I was required to enter the MAC address of all the devices which would be accessing my home Wi-Fi network. Although finding the MAC address of your android mobile is easy but an amateur who just bought a new android phone a few days back may feel a little difficulty.

If your Wi-Fi network uses Media Access Control (MAC) address filtering for security, you need to know the MAC address for your phone, and then add it to an access list for that network before you can connect. To find it: • On Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings Settings icon > About > More info, and then note the MAC address. Note If you have a Windows Phone that doesn't show the MAC address yet, you can view the address after updating your phone software. Connect your phone to your computer using the cable, then follow the instructions in the Zune software. See How do I update my phone software? for more info.

Since your wireless adapter on the laptop works on the unsecured settings: It sounds like your laptop's wireless adapter does not support WPA2-PSK security. You can try using WPA settings and if that does not work try setting the router for WEP security. WEP is not as strong as the others but will prevent neighbors from "piggybacking" on your wireless If your system does not support WPA then try using WEP security. It's not as strong but better than nothing. . Another thing to do is to set up your Belkin with "MAC address filtering". That only allows devices having the MAC address you select to use the WiFi . To turn on MAC address filtering: Go into networking on your laptop and click on advanced to find your adapter's MAC address. Write it down then go into your Belkin's setup page, find "MAC address filtering" and enter you adapter's MAC address. Finally "Enable" MAC address filtering for your router. This will probably be enough to stop the "piggybacking" even if you do not have the wifi secured at all. If your neighbors are professional hackers there is no security that can not be broken but if they are casual piggybackers MAC address filters will stop them cold. You also can setup WEP security if needed.
