Micromax Canvas Doodle 4 First Cut - New Design but stale specs

The Micromax Canvas Doodle 4 hasn't anything on paper that would make it stand out in the crowded market.

Micromax Canvas Doodle 4 is now official. Micromax today announced that the phone will be available in the market for best buy price of Rs 9,499. We spent few hours with the device and here is our first impression.

Specs

The smartphone has a 6 inch display but with just qHD (540x960 pixels) resolution. But the screen has the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The Doodle 4 also has a decent 1.3 GHz quad core processor and 1 GB RAM combination which is expected to keep it smooth.

For storage, the phone offers 8 GB of internal storage and a micro SD card slot too. The Micromax Canvas Doodle 4 has an 8 megapixel auto focus rear camera and a 2 megapixel fixed focus front camera.

This Android Lollipop based smartphone has WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, micro USB 2.0 port and GPS with AGPS support. There is a 3000 mAh non-removable battery in the phone which looks absolutely necessary for this mammoth. There are two micro SIM slots in the phone and it offers 3G connectivity.

Nothing Extraordinary

The handset at Rs 9,499 does not look spectacular. With this kind of features, the phone is not likely to stand out in the crowded Indian handset market where Micromax's own Yu Yuphoria and Yu Yureka exist apart from a couple of attractive handset from the Xiaomi, Asus and Lenovo.

Take the display resolution for instance. With qHD resolution for a 6 inch phone seems too low. Also quad core processor and 1 GB RAM combination looks thing of the past these days with octa core and 2 GB RAM are becoming common even in the sub-Rs 10,000 segment. New age devices also come with better internal storage and 4G is the talking point of these days.

First Impression

The Doodle 4 is ofcourse has much better specs than its predecessor - the Doodle 3. In terms of design, the phone is much lighter and sleeker than its competitors. Despite having a huge 6 inch display, it weighs like a 5 inch device. There are infact no bezel on either right or left side of the phone. While the strong metallic frame is likely to protect its internals well, the matte finish back panel (which is plastic) gives a smooth feeling and grip which is quite essential for such a phablet.

Despite having qHD resolution, the phone's display looked good but I felt that the touch response is a bit below par. I did not have much time to explore its performance but I did not feel any lag while using the phone.

The Micromax Canvas Doodle 4's 8 megapixel rear camera and 2 megapixel front camera looked okay but ofcourse a detailed analysis needed which we will do shortly.

Verdict
To conclude, the all-new Micromax Canvas Doodle 4 looks average on paper but do keep in mind that sometime even ordinary looking phones turned out to be great value for money devices. We will try to review the device as soon as possible after which the true picture will emerge.
