Yu Yureka First Cut: Should you buy this Micromax smartphone for Rs 8,999?

The Yureka has a 13 megapixel rear camera with f2.2 aperture and Sony Exmor sensor and 5P lens. The camera can capture slow motion videos in 30 FPS.

Micromax today unveiled its Yu brand. The first phone to be launched under the new brand is the Yureka which will be available on registration on Amazon.in from this December 19. The handset is attractively priced at Rs 8,999. But the question still remains: should you buy it?

Here we have tried to address this question in the form of our first impression about the device.

Unprecedented User Access

The most highlighted aspect of the Yureka is its innovative user interface that gives unprecedented access to the users. This has been made possible with Cyanogen 11 operating system that is based on Android 4.4 KitKat version and allows users to tinker its UI like never before. You can access its Bootloader, Kernel, and can root it without worrying about warranty. Yes you heard it right; for the first time perhaps, a company is giving full warranty even if you root the device.

Yu Yureka

But don't rejoice too much. If you have never rooted your smartphone or have never felt the need to do so, then Yureka is just any other smartphone for you. There is a reason why companies don't give root access to users. Unrooted devices are most stable and are tested for a smooth experience. Rooting is always a risky adventure during which you may render your device useless if you the process goes wrong.

Display

The Yureka comes with 5.5 inch display which uses an IPS panel and thus viewing angles are decent. The display has also Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. However, the display has only high definition resolution and not full HD resolution which seems necessary for such a big screen.

But do I sound too greedy for asking for full HD resolution considering that the phone is priced at just Rs 8,999? May be not, a consumer who would be looking to this buy this device will have decent amount of knowledge about mobile technology and to be more specific different display quality standards. This kind of a user will be disappointed with the display output. Even I was not impressed with the dsplay output on medium brightness.

Hardware

The Yu Yureka comes with 64 bit Snapdragon 615 octa core processor that has a clock speed of 1.5 GHz and Adreno 405 GPU. It has huge 2 GB DDR3 RAM too and this combination should offer a smooth performance. As per the company, this combination scored 31117 on Antutu which perhaps the best for any device priced below Rs 10,000.

Moreover, the Yureka has 16 GB of inbuilt storage and a 32 GB micro SD card slot. It has also a 2500 mAh battery that claims to offer 7 hours of 4G talktime, or 8 hours of 3G talktime, or 9 hours of 2G talktime, or 6 hours of music playback with maximum brightness. The battery back up isn't quite encouraging though. I have a feeling that when one uses this phone battery output will be lesser that what is claimed by the company. Apart from that all the hardware specs in Yu Yureka seems a good bargain.

Camera

The Yureka has a 13 megapixel rear camera with f2.2 aperture and Sony Exmor sensor and 5P lens. The camera can capture slow motion videos in 30 FPS. In the front, it has a 5 megapixel camera with 4P lens and OV5648 sensor.

Verdict
In a nutshell, the Yu Yureka looks like an interesting buy at Rs 8,999. But we will have to do a detailed review of the device before we pass on the judgment. Also, if we talk about the look and feel of the device the back panel looks impressive but a plastic RIM that is surrounding the display may show signs of colour fading after prolong use.
