For this, Apple has reportedly teamed up with LG who has been the exclusive supplier for dual-cameras for the iPhone 7 Plus.
Going by the latest rumours, Apple is reportedly working with LG to implement 3D photography in the dual-camera set up for iPhone 8. Interestingly, LG Innotek has its own 3D camera technologies so it might not sound much surprising if Apple is working something similar for the next iPhone.
Sources reveal that - "Apple is now studying how to apply its 3D camera technology into LG Innotek's smartphone camera." Adding to this, it also revealed that - "Since LG Innotek also has its own 3D camera and related technologies, such joint efforts will likely to bear fruit sometime within next year."
The report further adds that LG is already supplying dual cameras for iPhone 7 Plus and it is said to be the only supplier for the same as of now.
With this rumour, suddenly Apple's acquisition of Linx Imaging company comes into the picture. Apple acquired the Israeli start-up last year in April and the company also took the ownership giving it all the access to the technology which came in, following the acquisition. One of them is touted to be 3D depth mapping and lighting enhancements. Well, this might be the same technology used by Apple to introduce the portrait mode in the iPhone 7.
Based on acquisitions and reports, Apple does seem to have technology can enable features like the ability to refocus an image after it has been captured, measurement of the true dimensions of objects, 3D object modeling and real-time background replacement for video calls. However, 3D photography is still in the initial stage and we don’t know what Apple has it in store.
Recollecting previous rumours, Apple is also working on Augmented Reality in iPhone 8. The company acquired Flyby Media earlier this year in January after it acquired Mataio last year in April. Further, as you must have noticed, Apple is likely to dump the version name 7s and go straight away for iPhone 8 as it is iPhone's 10th Anniversary next year.
