Close on the heels of the spectrum from the last bidding round being handed over formally to successful bidders, Idea Cellular today announced its plans to rollout 4G services in nine more circles and is planning to expand its wireless broadband footprint to 20 circles by FY17.
For this year, Idea has shortlisted nearly 57,000 additional sites to enable the launch of 4G in 9 circles. The spectrum has been already acquired in the recent auction for the launch of 4G in 9 circles, which includes UP West, UP East, Gujarat, Mumbai, Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Assam and Jammu & Kashmir.
"Currently, Idea's wireless broadband network is spread across 17 circles with a population of over 880 million, with 50% of this population already covered. The company plans to achieve a network of nearly 250,000 sites and optical fibre network of 1.41 Lakh Km this FY to lay a strong foundation for futuristic mobile broadband services", the company said in the press note.
"Idea's 4G footprint, by the end of this year, will cover our key 20 circles contributing 94% of the company revenue and 90% of industry revenue. To fund this expansion, company is infusing Rs. 7,500 to 8,000 crore for rapid rollout of 4G network and company has spent Rs 13,000 crore to acquire spectrum in the recent auction.
As per e-KYC users can avail instant connection using 'Adhaar' card number and buy submitting biometrics (iris/fingerprint).
The telecom operator expanded 4G services in towns including Bhiwani, Fatehabad, Jind, Palwal, Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, Dharuhera, Pinjore, Sohna etc.
Idea is offering free 4G SIM and 1 GB complimentary data with five days validity.
Idea has also launched new Freedom Packs, which are low cost data packs starting at just Rs 35 with 4 weeks' validity.
The revised data packs are available across all circles starting Friday, 15th July 2016.
Under this program, Idea prepaid internet users can gift 100 MB of data to non internet users and they can get 100 MB of data as well.
Recently, Idea slashed its 3G and 4G night data pack prices by up to 50 per cent.
The Day and Night Twin packs start from Rs 115 for 500 MB (250 MB Day + 250 MB Night) per month and go up to 40 GB (20GB Day + 20GB Night).
