Just 41 percent mobile users in India use smartphones

By the end of September 2016, India witnessed a total of 197.5 million mobile shipments, of which 78.4 million were shipped in Q3 itself, reports CMR.

India has seen a tremendous growth rate in adoption of smartphones in the last couple of years. But still, only 41 percent mobile users in the country use smartphones, rest continue to use feature phones.

According to the latest report by CMR (CyberMedia Research), about 59% of the total mobile market is still taken by feature phones. The report claims that, by the end of September 2016, India witnessed a total of 197.5 million mobile shipments, of which 78.4 million were shipped in Q3 itself. Further, CMR predicts this tally to be 265 million by the year end, of which 116 million shipments are expected to be of smartphones.

In terms of mobile handsets market, Samsung is leading the race. The South Koran giant stands at 24.6 percent in terms of Smartphones and 24.5% in terms of Feature phones making it the overall leader with 24.5 percent market share. Following Samsung was Lenovo in Smartphones market at 10.4 percent and for Feature phones market, Lava grabbed the second position with 12.3 percent share.

Coming to the Technology segment, in terms of 4G smartphones, Samsung again stood top with 32.1 percent followed by Lenovo and LYF at 14.6 percent and 10.7 percent respectively. Moving to the 3G smartphones, here Micromax took the lead with 17.4 percent market share followed by Intex at 15.4 percent and Karbonn at 10.9 percent.

Moving on to the Price segments, Samsung again took the Affordable Smartphones segment with 21 percent share. Not only this, it also led the way in Premium Smartphones and Super Premium Smartphones segment at 37.3 percent and 49.2 percent. Interestingly, the South Korean giant also stood out in 'Value for Money Smartphones' at 34 percent market share.

CMR report claimed that about 66 percent of the phones in Q3 were Made in India. Moreover, a total of 137 brands shipped mobile phones, of which 69 were smartphones. Further, thanks to Reliance Jio, 83 percent of the 4G smartphones shipped were VoLTE enabled.

As far as the operating system (OS) is concerned, about 98 percent of the smartphones came with Google's Android OS, of which 25 percent came with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. In terms of RAM, about 32 percent of smartphones shipped with 1GB RAM and about 0.5 percent shipped with 6GB RAM.
