Airtel further claimed that it has been providing enough Points of Interconnection way before Jio's commercial launch and post that it started adding the PoIs at a staggering pace.
After TRAI accused Airtel of not providing enough Points of Interconnection (PoI)to Jio, Bharti Airtel has today announced that it has further provided over 7,000 additional PoIs taking the total tally of interconnection points to 17,000 which the company claims will be enough to cater a user base of 75 million.
Airtel further claimed that it has been providing enough POI way before Jio's commercial launch and post that it started adding the PoIs at a staggering pace. Further, the company said in a press release that this is 2.5 times the number provided to an existing operator with a comparable subscriber base.
In a related development welcoming the Airtel's move Jio said in a statement, "This allocation was long overdue considering the severe hardships caused to the customers of both operators in being able to connect voice calls between the two networks. More than 280 crore calls have failed between RJIL and Airtel over the last three and a half months because of an absolute shortage of POI capacity."
Back in June 2016, Jio forecasted its user base and asked for PoIs accordingly. On November 1, 2016, in a meeting which has TRAI present, Jio clarified the requested PoIs to which Airtel has now responded and provided additional interconnection points. As of now, about 25 million Jio users make calls to Airtel Network which is way less than what 17,000 PoIs can cater. Also, Airtel also ensured that it will further add more points once the user base exceeds the limit as Jio expects its user base to be about 100 million in near future.
Through the press release, Airtel has made sure that they are with full compliance with TRAI regulations and has even requested them to examine the call terminating issue which Airtel believes to be due to free services provided by Jio.
