Spectrum is any range of frequencies. Different communication channels use different frequency ranges.e.g. fm transmission uses 87.5khz to around 108khz. similarly, 2G mobile service also has a spectrum. Authorities sell(give useage license) parts of this spectrum to differnt network providers. i.e, if we want to transmit in that frequency, we need to get license from authority.

2G (or 2-G) is short for second-generation wireless telephone technology. Second generation 2G cellular telecom networks were commercially launched on the GSM standard in Finland by Radiolinja (now part of Elisa Oyj) in 1991. Three primary benefits of 2G networks over their predecessors were that phone conversations were digitally encrypted; 2G systems were significantly more efficient on the spectrum allowing for far greater mobile phone penetration levels; and 2G introduced data services for mobile, starting with SMS text messages.

With the development of technology, while fixed connection got outdated.Wireless technology of communication came into view.2G spectrum is supposed to be the second generation of this technology. 1.It is safer, environment friendly and more efficient. 2.Provided easy SMS facilities. 3.It was not prone to security risks, unlike its earlier version.
