Symbian is a mobile operating system and computing platform designed for smart phones and currently maintained by Accenture. Symbian was originally developed by symbian ltd.Symbian was used by many major mobile phone brands like Samsung,Motorola,Sony Ericsson and above all Nokia. It was the most popular smart phone OS a worldwide average until the end of 2010 when it was overtaken by Android.

Symbian rose to fame with S60 platform built by Nokia, first released in 2002 and powering most Nokia Smart phones UIQ another Symbian.

Symbian is in over 250 million devices and about half of all smartphones use it as their operating system. It's by far the most used OS on portable computing devices.

The reason you probably haven't heard of it is because it's not really a consumer brand. Manufacturers who use it in their smart phones tend not to mention it on the phone's box or on the start-up screen, so most Symbian users aren't aware that they are Symbian users.
